No it's called Defender Pro . It's epoxy based with Kevlar blended in.

My cousin had/has one of those in long flatbed dually 2x4 that had 450,000 miles on it and other than injectors/pump, and 3 transmissions is all original. If I know him like I believe I do he is still using it. BTW, when I saw it last it looked as nice as yours.

I wish our truck was a dually six speed manual. That's the holy grail. We have a very heavy Alpenlite cabover camper we haul and the dually might make it a bit more stable.

I had two extra leaves added to the rear springs as well as after market shocks and front and rear stabilizers.

No work to the motor, still stock at 140,000 miles with original auto tranny. The auto tranny's are the weak link especially if you haul heavy trailers or campers. I plan on upgrading the torque converter, valve body, bands, and billet input shaft. Should last forever then.

The motor will have some mods as well.

It's worth the investment. During our recent 16,000 mile road trip I had unsolicited offers for the truck at least twice a month, especially in Texas. The all mechanical 12 valves are quite sought after.

Frostbit, my son's friend has an 05 Cummins with the automatic trans and it has many miles on it but don't recall the actual number. He has hauled a camper and pulled a camper and hasn't had any trans problems, but he has the trans serviced like a religion. The garage changes the fluid and adjusts the bands every time. I think that is the key to longevity of the pre Assan transmissions, just like the GM 700R4 they put in half ton pick-up and suburbans back in the mid 80s. The GMs weren't too bad for pulling IF the fluid was changed about every 2nd or 3rd engine oil change.

When I bought my 2011 Cummins I was planning on a standard trans but they convinced me that the Assan would stand up to pulling my 5th wheel camper. My mechanic friend told me the dealership got a pick-up in on trade that had 260,000+ miles on it that was used in the oil fields and the Assan trans had been so hot the paint on the pan was burnt off and it still shifted like new! That is the way they should be built. Sometimes I think they build stuff to fail, and it really steams me.

Very nice. I love those Gen2 Dodges with 12V Cummins. Treat 'em right and they'll treat you right for a long time. I drive an '06 now, but mostly because I wanted/needed four full doors for the growing brood. Were I single or an empty-nester, I'd be quite content putting 'round the country in a rig just like yours (make mine a manual tranny though).

I couldn't agree more. I have a friend with a growing family and he couldn't believe Dodge waited till after the Gen II's to have a real crew cab.

As far as manual tranny, I'm with you. I would have preferred a NV-5600 6 speed manual but I bought this truck used in 2000, 16 years ago, and we are well bonded. Big Grin

I bought my '06 just a few years ago used and am getting pretty fond of it though. Just cracked 100k a few months ago.

Adjust the bands? That is a scam like fuel injector flushes and brake fluid flushes Yeah I'm in the business. Dodge did have a lot of trouble with their 5 speeds breaking the output "main" shafts. Seems trannies have little trouble now with fluid and filter changes every 36,000 or so.

Did NV5600 go away because it wasn't up to the task with later H.O. engine, or emissions, or lack of consumer interest? Seems Dodge should offer an new manual for big power.

The new manual is a G56. Engine is rate at 660 foot pounds.

We've decided to do a build on the Cummins. It was a little anemic on some of the long grades with the camper in it during our 16,000 road trip last winter.

It's bone stock at present.

Mods planned:

Killer Dowel Pin fix.

Gauges including trans temp, Pyrometer, Boost gauge

60 # valve springs

4" turbo back exhaust Flo Pro Stainless with muffler

S&B Cold Air Intake with filter wrap

BD #8 fuel plate with AFC tune

3k BD Governor Spring Kit

Exhaust Brake with Auto Loc.

Replace non-functioning fuel sending unit.

The trans will need upgraded.

Borgwarner Band
New Internal Electronics
New Thrust Washers
New Overdrive Piston Retainer
Billet Servo Cover
Billet Band Strut
