I wondered why the baseball kept getting bigger. Then it hit me.

The MLB All-Star Game has devolved into nothing. It felt like the ASG back in the day meant something to the players and certainly to the fans. If you were a Yankee fan, you rooted for the American League, and hoped any Yankees did well. If you were a Giant fan you rooted for the National League, and of course you hoped Willie Mays would excel. Baseball is no longer the National Pastime. I tried to watch the All-Star Game the other night and gave up after a few innings. The telecast wasn't focused on the game and its result. It didn't look like anyone cared. It was focused on the overpaid businessmen on the field and the need for the network and MLB to make money. Many of the key players put in their one or two innings then left the building before the game even finished. There is nothing more irritating to me than to have players on the field mic'd-up and jabbering during play about how they grew-up, or a manager reminiscing about when he played ball as a kid. I understand how being voted into the All-Star Game is a meaningful achievement, but let's not waste everyone's time actually playing what is just a meaningless exhibition. I won't even call it a game. | ||
