I am thinking of getting into muzzleloading and was looking for recommendations on a book on the topic - I would like one book that covers as much as possible on muzzleloading, to include the "latest and greatest" technology. I plan on (based on what I learn) getting a 54 caliber Hawkin, will shoot often and will hunt with it also. Any ideas on a book ? Thanks - KMule

I suggest The Complete Blackpowder Handbook. This covers just about everything. There are plenty of other books depending on your interest. There are also many on-line sources of info. If you have specific questions, ask.

By all means, get your library to borrow the book, THE MUZZLELOADING CAPLOCK RIFLE, < !--color--> by Ned Roberts (designer of the .257 Roberts cartridge) for you. Ned started his shooting career with a .30 ML rifle that his uncle brought back from the Civil War, and Ned's shooting career spanned from the ML era through the early breechloaders, all the way past the .220 Swift! You need to read it at least once, and may want to buy one for a reference. Now, this book DOESN'T contain "everything best and new", BUT old-timers like Roberts forgot more than most of us today will ever know about muzzleloaders, and a lot of it is revealed in this little book!! Please note: The "latest" ain't always the "greatest". Sometimes these two characteristics ARE MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE!!

Hi KMule,

One of the best reads I've found for a new guy to
muzzle loading is free. It can be found at:

http://www.realtree.com/bluelk/index.tpl It was written
by a dear ol' ML pro who was recently deceased, and was
like a father or uncle to those who frequented the
Realtree ML forum. His favorite was also a .54. Just a
few months before his death, he got to take a huge wild
boar with it.

I recommend that you get magazine subscriptions Muzzleloader magazine, Blackpowder Hunting, and Muzzleblasts magazine.

The subscription to muzzleblasts magazine comes with membership to the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association.
