Gentlemen, I used to have a Lyman bullet mold for a .58 Zoave rifle, that was hollow based, and was as accurate as it could be in my rifle. I just traded for a Pedersoli Kodiak .58 M/L double rifle, and would like a mold for a bullet like the old one. I checked with Lyman website, and they only make molds to .54 cal. My question is who makes such a mold? ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

MacD, Lyman Minie ball molds appear on EBay from time to time so you may want to check there (search for Lyman bullet mold or Lyman bullet mould). Lee Precision also makes several Minie designs: Original Style is #575-500M (500gr.); Improved is #575-472 (472gr.) or overisize, #578-478M (478gr.), Target is 575-470M (470gr.; looks like a tumble lube design). Also, William J. Loos of Rochester, N.Y. has quite a few of the older Lyman designs and is quite knowledgeable about them. His tel. no. is 585-544-1027.

Be sure that the bullet does not just drop down the bore. In a double you need to have it tight enought that the second barrel's bullet does not move foreward under recoil of the first. If it were to do so and create an airspace you could damage or burst the second barrel on firing.

Dixie Gun Works has Lyman and a couple other brands of moulds for .58 cal. Minie type hollow base bullets, and other types as well. Rapine also makes a number of such designs for .577-.58 caliber barrels. Lee Precision also makes several types of .58 and .58 OVERSIZE hollow-base bullet moulds. I have a Lee .54 Minie ball mould, and it is satisfactory. However, I like the Lyman moulds better. My best performing .58 Minie bullet is from the Lyman 57530 mould, a 570-grain flatnose Minie bullet. I use it in a .58 Hawken with 120 grains of FFg, and it gives 1200 FPS MV with that load. Plenty of power for just about anything! Here's a picture of that slug flanked by two .45/70 cartridges. "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

Mac: Somebody's kidding you. Go to Midwayusa.com and Lyman makes a whole mess of .58 minie moulds. So does RCBS, Lee and Rapine. Gad, there are .58 molds coming out of the woodwork. By the way, I had a lot of fun with the Pritchett bullet out of a Rapine mold in the Kodiak .58. There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author
