I love the classic caliber 9.3x62 and appreciate the character of a ruger #1. I've loosely been keeping my eye open for one, yet all of the ones I've seen are horribly plain (2x4s in the barn have nicer wood grain to them).
Has anyone seen one with nice wood or all of them as boring as I've already seen?
Thanks for the input.

Some time ago, Luxus Walnut made replacement stocks for Ruger #1 rifles out of high-grade Turkish Walnut. I thought it was a great idea, but it was abandoned when they went into making the Luxus Model 11 rifles. I love the Ruger #1 as well, but have never brought myself to buy one due to the plain Jane wood. You can find custom #1 rifles out there, but most are well north of $4K.

If you Google "custom ruger #1 stocks", you'll find several sources of pre-made finished stocks, 98% finished stocks, and blanks for the Ruger #1.

FActory ruger #1 stocks used to be made from semi fancy walnut; but a number of years ago they stopped and all are now plain black walnut. If you want a good one, you have to get an after market stock. Or re-barrel an old rifle.

Nice wood but I didn't see any for the Ruger #1.

Here is my No. 1 in 30-378, with wood from Walnut Grove.
This is one of at least three different patterns I looked at before picking this particular pattern. Chris had some turned last time I was up there and was getting ready to do some more.

Absolutely gorgeous. This sounds like it may very well be the best option.
Thanks everyone for your input.

I spent $400 on the semi inletted blank and another $275 to have it finished.

I usually do my own fitting but had never done a two piece stock so I decided to have it done by someone else.

Chris, at Walnut Grove Gunstocks has a lot of this English with the dark streaks available. I have three stocks from this tree.

The one below is on my 550 Gibbs

My .204 has really nice wood but haven't seen a similar factory stock since then. My 7mm Rem Mag had nice wood too, but I sold it in the 90s.

Im not aware that Ruger ever made the NO. 1 in 9.3x62, only the bolt action Ruger African comes in 9.3x62, The no.1 in 9.3x74 was a special run item..

Ray,
I am fairly certain the the Ruger 1s in 2014 was in 9.3x62.
Every one that I've seen on line is about as plain as plain gets.
In the interim, I was able to pick up a beautiful 1 in 9.3x74. Last week it put 4 shots at 150 yards into a nice 1" group.
I am content....

My 9.3x62 No. 1 has very plain wood, but it shoots well since I put in a Hick's Accurizer. I just got back from a hunt in South Africa and really enjoyed hunting with it. I shot nyala, eland, and waterbuck with it with the 250 gr. Barnes TTSX.

If you drive along side railroad tracks, you see the old ties laying there?

Ruger has a contract with the UP to buy all of them and make rifle stocks...
