Interested to hear whether a different approach to a recoil lug on a Rem 700 would work. I want to build a switch barrel in Several RUM chamberings, up to 375 RUM. I would prefer to avoid the washer style recoil lug to make barrel changes easier, and was wondering if a lug could be bolted onto the bottom of the receiver, along the lines of a Win M70 lug? I have never seen this done before, and am thinking this is probably due to minimal material to work with on the receiver? I know I could pin the standard style Rem 700 recoil lug, but if this is the only option, I would be more inclined to go with an action that has an integral lug. Just trying to understand my options here.

I've seen lugs soldered to the underside of Rem 700 receivers. I believe the Gun Digest Book of Riflesmithing by Jack Mitchell details such a modification.

I have done several that way, took a piece of 5/16 flat stock and milled a .675" radius on it and soldered it to the underside using the 1/4" bolt hole to align it. You could also put a radius on the front receiver ring to make the inletting a bit easier. If I remember correctly, Butch Lambert did something exactly like that several years ago on one of his many gunbuilding threads...I believe they tig welded the lug on. Shoot straight, shoot often. Matt
