Interested to hear whether a different approach to a recoil lug on a Rem 700 would work. I want to build a switch barrel in Several RUM chamberings, up to 375 RUM.

I would prefer to avoid the washer style recoil lug to make barrel changes easier, and was wondering if a lug could be bolted onto the bottom of the receiver, along the lines of a Win M70 lug?

I have never seen this done before, and am thinking this is probably due to minimal material to work with on the receiver?

I know I could pin the standard style Rem 700 recoil lug, but if this is the only option, I would be more inclined to go with an action that has an integral lug.

I've seen lugs soldered to the underside of Rem 700 receivers. I believe the Gun Digest Book of Riflesmithing by Jack Mitchell details such a modification.

I have done several that way, took a piece of 5/16 flat stock and milled a .675" radius on it and soldered it to the underside using the 1/4" bolt hole to align it. You could also put a radius on the front receiver ring to make the inletting a bit easier.

If I remember correctly, Butch Lambert did something exactly like that several years ago on one of his many gunbuilding threads...I believe they tig welded the lug on.
