Guys,
The M17 is recognised (with work) as being capable of taking the largest cartridges. But what is the maximum COL that can be engineered into one? Can the action be set up to take a cartridge of say 3.8" overall and still function as a bolt-action repeater? What work is needed?
Cheers...

3.7 is fairly easy.. alter the box, the bolt stop, the ejector, the rear bridge and a little on the front.

Jeffe,
If you have a moment could you elaborate on how exactly you would:
quote:
alter the box, the bolt stop, the ejector, the rear bridge and a little on the front

I'm sure my 'smith would know but its partly my education too Roll Eyes.

I'll try, but this is a high level sketch
remember, this is not general enfield action cleanup, which is far more involved

box - couple choices
new sheetmetal 300HH length from numrich (it's junk)

disassemble and rebuilt original if NOT stamped sheet metal... cut off rivets, make exntensions for the sides, turn about the ends, tig weld at proper length and width.

or make a new box (not very hard)

Rear bridge
the charger lumps are in the way for just about anything over 3.4 .. one way to cut them back is with an endmill and the action first laying on one side, then the other, to keep something like a sporting shape... though some (and I have done it) like it with small radiai (sp) in the corners...

cut the charger lump back (I just take it off, till it hits the bridge)

front, might have to open the radius on the front port.. might have to remove a bit of metal to make the entry a hair large

boltstop ... change to need and taste.. this is a long winded area that once you think about how it hits, you can see how to get the length... and then there's about 5 ways to pretty them up..
