From your questions, I would say that you are an accident waiting to happen. Save some money and possibley your life and take your project to a competent gunsmith. If you really have to do it yourself, enroll in a gunsmithing college and complete the course first.

Right hand thread. How tight? Damn tight! Can the receiver be damaged? You bet! Apply heat? No. Make a wrench the fits the receiver fairly well.(outside) You don't want this wrench to simply clamp top and bottom but to fit. The barrel vise should be solidly mounted. Regards, Bill.

Bill, Thank you VERY MUCH for the information. These questions sound stupid, but I want to understand as much as possible about this BEFORE I get started. Are the Wheeler action wrenches any good? Who makes/sells the best action wrench? Judging from your comments, I would suspect that investing in the lead plates for the barrel vise is a MUST. Is this an accurate assumption? Is there something better than the lead? Thanks again, Axel

I machine my own aluminum barrel bushings. When used with rosin they will not mar the bluing. [ 02-02-2003, 06:02: Message edited by: Bear Claw ]
