This is a 30-06 pump action rifle. According to the owner this rifle has fired more than 3000 rounds. He says the rifle will not group any more sprays shots all over. It still fires ok.

I am looking at the parts diagram. What parts needs replacing the barrel maybe for one? The bolt head, Barrel bracket and perhaps the barrel extension? I like to do this work for my friend if it involves changing parts only.

Is is possible this rifle is totally worn out?
I have not received it yet so I can't tell the shape of the moving parts. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

It might be shot out but I would get all the copper out first before I determined that. You would be suprised how many older rifles come back from the dead with a good cleaning. The round count is getting up there, but it still should have another 2000 or so in it. Maybe not but its the cheapest fix, and often the exact problem.....copper fouling.

get a can of foam cleaner for wally world.. fill the barrel and let it sit over night.. repeat... bush and patch out.. oil.. go shoot...

if it throws rounds out, it's probably not hurt.. parts and repairs are a bitch

Ditto what everyone said. Worst case, the crown and first part of the bore were ruined by careless cleaning from the front. That will take a borescope to determine but if so, you might return it to new just by removing the first inch or so of barrel.

Thanks you guys. I have a Hawk eye bore scope and a hack saw. I hope I can get this gun to shoot again. My friend says he had the gun since a kid. I heard him saying he shot it every week end and never cleaned it.

That must be the trouble a lot of service rifles shot more than 3000 and still work fine. Another thing about farm boys the can sort of miss count of how many rounds went through it.

He has a fine Tikka bolt gun in 06 said it did not shoot. The power selector retaining screw was lost. Checked it with my collimetor the scope was off 3 feet.

When I toke the top rings off to install one of my own scopes, The rear base fell off it was not clamped into the dovetail. Now why would a rifle not shoot with only one ring holding the scope, and the windage cranked all the way to one side. ha?.

Definitly check crown,amount of fouling, barrel to frame, mounts and scope and all the usual first. If shot out or cleaning rod damage is evident it could be an excellent candidate for a rebore to a 35 Whelen or 338-06. Just another way to extend the life of one of those "contraptions". Makes a great little brush rifle.

A homemade electric bore cleaner will get out an amazing amount of crud. If no luck after a REALLY GOOD cleaning, simply get a used barrel from Gunparts Corp- they have 308's in rifle and carbine lenght for about $100. The barrels interchange easily, not excatly as easy as a 870 shotgun but within the competence of the normal shooter.

Yup...my thinking exactly.....A lot of guns are traded solely because they don't shoot good.....and all they need is a good cleaning.

Well I got to work on it and stripped it down.
What a mess that barrel was. Four screws on the scope base all lose. Somebody used a hammer on the crown. After cleaing; that barrel looks almost civil. Little bit of pitting everything seams to be tight.

It toke lots of penetrating fluid to get it apart.

So I will cut off the barrel a 1/2" and put on a new crown and try it out. I think it will shoot again.

Thanks you all for the advise, I never worked on an 06 Rem pump. The NRA "Guide Book to Shoulder Arms" helped to strip it down.
