What's the quality like on the 798 Magnums in 375 and 458?

I was thinking of doing the pair like this.

Satterlee
new 90 degree bolt
3 pos safety
barrels shortened to 22

Blackwell
new bottom metal with drop magazine

Bansner
synthetic stocks

Robar
NP3

NECG
For sights

I have built numerous rifles using a MKX action, a few with the Daly action. I would not even think of building a custom that I was going to spend any $$$ on starting with the 798 version. The action needs a lot more work to smooth up than the older versions. Even saying that I would not spend the $$ you are talking about on the MKX action. While it is a very good action it (nor the 798) will just not hold value in a custom.

Buy a couple used FNs good barrels and go from there. You will be a lot happier with the results.

As for the Bansner High Tech stock. If you haven't I would sure feel one before you buy one. I have built a 5x57 and 280 on their stocks and they have worked fine. I would not use one on a 375 nor 458. I've never seen a drop box listed for the Mauser on their site. That would take a lot of glass build up to make it work.

As usual just my $.02

So your telling me the FN is long enough for a 375?

If that's the case then there we go!

I will be on the look out for a few used FNs.

I'll talk to Mark Bansner and see what the deal is with the drop belly guns. I know he makes a drop belly for the Dakota 76 he build, and he told me if I wanted a rifle built on a GMA mauser it was no problem.

Yep thumb The FN and a 375 built on a MKX, Daly and now 798 all start with a standard length 98 action. From the factory they open the action up mostly in the front. Some have issues with removing that much metal from the feed ramp and lower lug area. I have never heard of one failing.

I'm unsure if the Drop bottom metal is designed for front or rear removal. If you are going that route I would get the metal and open the action to match.

Basnser may make a drop box stock. I didn't see it listed on his sight. Heck he might be talking about a completly differect stock than his High Tech line. All it takes is more epxoy and glass anyway. On the two I built using his stocks I just thought the stocks felt like plastic. I've had lighter stocks that "felt" stronger.
