Hello, Can anyone recommend a gunsmith to re-contour a barrel? Thanks in advance! | ||

Do a search a few weeks back and see the thread on recontouring barrels. Quite a bit of controversy as to whether it should even be done. From what I got out of it most gunsmiths don't like to do it because of the risk of losing accuracy. If memory serves me correctly, Malm had quite a bit to say about it. Maybe he might be one to ask if he would do it for you. He posts here. | |||

I agree with 22WRF, you risk accuracy. Better to get a new one, it will cost about the same. Remember, forgivness is easier to get than permission. | |||

Lilja Rifle Barrels has a contour lathe and just might cut a new contour for you. Has been offered to me by Lilja before but Dan is a friend. Give it a try. The only easy day is yesterday! | |||

I had a Ruger MKII 338mag recontoured. Accuracy was about the same before and after. 1.25-1.5MOA Mine was a stainless and the cost was less than $100. I'm sure there is plenty of success and failure history. As usual just my $.02 Paul K | |||

Would you let us know who did it.....some apparantly need the service. BTW....the accuracy thing is another sky is falling thing.....you can also loose the barrel in the UPS (shipping)...that wouldn't stop me from shipping..... Some of the top barrel manufactures had something to say as well. I've seen my share of success's and failures. The object in my shop is to make money, not lose it, so with that, I only bet on sure things these days. If I want to roll the dice, I have only to travel west for a little over an hour to get some action.  | |||

Well the place that did it is located on the NE side of Houston. They are known for their super light rifles. They recontoured my barrel and I had no trouble. I will not give out their names becaused the last thing they did they messed up. I was having a brand new barreled action shortened 2" They scratched it. (yes those things happen) But instead of saying anything they tried to hide it. Then when I caught it they said some people are just never satisfied. They will get no more of my metal business and I can't refer them. As usual just my $.02 Paul K | |||

The shop that did it was Match Grade Arms in Houston. As I said they recontoured and shortened my Ruger stainless barrel and I had no trouble nor change in accuracy. It was 5-6 years ago and the fee was less than $100. As I stated due to other trouble I've had I will no longer use them nor will I recommend them. As usual just my $.02 Paul K | |||
