Here is the run down on the parts.

Global Trading Mauser action
Old 1/2 round 1/2 octagon full integral rib guild barrel in .338-06
SunnyHill Enterprises custom mounts.

I sunk it into the pattern today. It still needs a lot of work, but I go on vacation next week. I'll be shaping it up and sending it to Shane Thompson for one of his 1 to 1 duplications.

The bolt handle didn't want to work with the scope I was planning on using (it has a very big ocular lens) so I send the bolt over to Mike McCabe (z1r) for a new one that'll be better suited to the scope.

I just thought I would throw a few pics out there of a new project It started about a year ago when I won an auction on ebay for an old Guild gun Mauser barrel. It was chambered for an 8X57. I sent all the metal work to Mark Stratton. After he looked the barrel over it was determined the bore was shot so, it was sent to Jim Dubell for a rebore.

Mark didn't really want to take the project on because he was already snowed under in work at the time. I talked him into it and he reluctantly agreed, but before he could get started about everything you could possibly imagine happened to Mark last year and project got put on hold. Mark has pulled himself up by the bootstraps and is now on the mend and catching up on his back log. I got the barreled action back yesterday and plan on having a good time with this one.

Here is the blank I'll be using. I got this bad boy from Adam Freeman over at Luxus gunstock. I've never been treated better. Super to work with and Scholarship Rifle contributor.

I'll post some more pics next week as the pattern takes shape.

No, Mark was going to re-cut the receiver for Talley's but I found these at SunnyHill Enterprises. They seem to be very well made.

Hi Bill, about 4-5 months ago I was refinishing a Mannlicher-Schoenauer stock. The stock had a reddish orange stain on it and I wanted it match the color as close as possible when I refinished it. The stock you see in the pictures has about the same color walnut and I knew it would never be anything more than pattern stock. I used this stock as a test bed to mix and match the stain for the Mannlicher-Schoenauer. I know the way it looks right now you have to use some serious imagination to see what it's going to be. When I get time and do a little more shaping, a guild stock will come out of that mess hillbilly

Hey Terry,
I have a barrel like that. I sent it to Jim Dubell and it is now a 9.3x62. I decided not to use it as I wasn't sure about what to do with the dovetail just in front of the receiver. I have since chambered another barrel. I really like that old barrel and will leave it in the safe for mine or somebodies project. Yours is looking very good by the way.

Butch, when you have the barrel installed just have your smith cut you a filler plug for the dovetail. Mine had the same thing. Mark cut one for mine, but left it a little big so I could do the finish shaping myself. It's a little time consuming and time is money. I happen to have a lot more of one than the other and Mark knew I was pinching pennies on this one. I might send it over to Scrollcutter after everything else is done and have him put some squiggly lines back on the plug. I read post of his once were he said he was a certified squiggly line installation technician Big Grin

Terry, those rings are really sharp! Does Sunnyhill have those as a regular cataloged item? I'd like to have a pair.

I'll second that motion, always some cool stuff- what's the deal on a Global Trading action? I did a search on them and didn't get anywhere. History, pricing, etc?

thanks.

These Global trading Mausers were imported Legacy sports (Howa fame) for a while. They were Empire arms base action for their custom rifles for a long time. They started out fairly cheap at about $275 apiece which was a great price considering they have a straddle floorplate 3 position safety and cool integral mounts. The problem was nobody made any mounts that fit the action and the quality ranged from a little rough (Charles Daily) to completely un-useable.

Legacy raised the price to $500 to the public and nobody bought them anymore. Empire rifles got tired of all the extra work they had to do with these and started making their own action and they didn't buy anymore. Eventually Legacy got tired of sitting on these and dumped on the streets for $250 apiece and that's when I jumped on this one.

Sunnyhill enterprises made the mounts for empire and had a few left. They don't catalog this item, but might still a few left if anyone needs them I would call and see if the still have them.

The Global Trading Mauser is pretty much a thing of the past. Who ever heard of an Italian Mauser anyway Razzer

The red tone can be gotten quite similarly by using Schaftol red stock oil as a toner and then overfinishing in the normal manner.
