Midway shipped me improperly labeled ammo and wants me to return it. I thought that UPS and FEDEX would not accept ammo from individuals but only from authorized vendors. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thank you

If Midway wants it back have them send a will call tag and ups/fedex will pick it up if they were the shipper to you.

Regardless of what some UPS and/or FedEx agents may tell you, you can ship live ammo by either carrier. Ground only. The package has to have an ORM D label on it and you have to declare the contents. Overseas (and Canada)? No no.

Thank you for the help.

I asked Midway to have it picked up but they would not - said it took too long. I called UPS and they were very nice and said OK to ship. They said to hand write an ORM-D label on the box.

Jeffe

That's interesting. I ship a lot of live ammo and have been told that ALL packages need a ORM D label on them and the contents declared as Small Arms Cartridges.

There are several different ORM D labels. The one that I was told is a requirement is:

Why that's unheard of! You didn't happen to get the person who was nice to you's name did you? I have a few customers who would like to call her, just so they can hear a knowledgeable and friendly voice on the other end... Big Grin

It sure was refreshing! I was talking with Haz Mat Dept 800-554-9964.

I then went to Lowe's and they reminded me what the world's REALLY like!

Most, if not all, of the related "stores" of the two shippers won't accept such shipments. These stores (UPS Store or FedEx/Kinkos) are contract setups and are not authorized to take such shipments. There is no problem when shipping from a UPS or FedEx owned shipping facility. Just don't walk into Kinkos and expect them to do anything other than freak out, so save yourself the trip. Find the "official" shipping center in your town.

Somewhat unrelated, but I just went through this with a couple of boxes of .41 Mag reloads that were included in an auction revolver I purchased. The seller was very nice, and, of course, one of the conditions was that I would pay actual shipping costs. It quickly became obvious to me that I should abandon the reloads rather than pay the shipping. I can buy a dozen or more boxes of ammo from Cabela's or Natchez SS and the shipping would be less than UPS quoted for sending me these 100 rounds. Obviously they get a commercial rate break that my individual seller didn't.

Bottom line, unless it's worth quite a bit, shipping ammo for an individual is a losing proposition IMO.

End of story: I told seller to keep it, or give it away on his end. Nice guy, he paid the shipping anyway and I received it yesterday.

True and they will also pick up at your house for $4.00, which they have done.

Now, just for amusement I'll tell what I was returning. Nosler Custom ($$$$$$$) .375 Weatherby ammo. I ordered 260 gr but when the box came it said in big print: "300 gr Partition 3000 FPS". It made my shoulder hurt just to look at the box Big Grin

I loaded up 100 rounds of new 7X57mm ammo for my son in CO. Shipped it to him via UPS, no sweat at all. Used to be that ammo could only be shipped to an FFL holder. I ran into this once when I sent a double rifle to Paul Jaeger in PA from TX, for them to fit a set of claw-mount rings. I sent them a box of the 8X60 RS ammo I had loaded for it, for regulating the gun, no problem. But they could NOT send the unused rounds back to me!

That was in 1983-no longer true!
