I purchased a large ring 98 action at a gun show yesterday. It was made in 1943 in Germany. Is this a good action for a hunting rifle? Are they strong and can they be made accurate?

Here are some pictures. BYF and 43 are stamped on top of the receiver as well as having the German eagle and 851C on the side.

Can anyone give me some info on this action?

thanks
Perry

There, I helped you out a bit with the photos

Looks like a standard milsurp M-98 Mauser and already drilled and tapped for scope.

The "byf" is the manufacturer's code, Mauser Werke, Oberndorf.

I have no idea. I found the action cheap and bought it with out a plan in mind. I have a 7x57 in a 700 Classic that I love but I am nostalgic enough that I would love to have one in a real Mauser. The largest rifle I own is a 30-06 so 8x57 might be cool too. I hunt deer in South Texas and dont really plan on going to Africa, as much as I would love to (budget constraints), so I am thinking smaller rather than larger. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Dont limit your suggestions to caliber. I need barrel, wood, trigger, safety, etc...

Mine is a 43 byf also, which I made into 6.5x55.The case hardening was not done well so I suggest that you have it reheat treated before you do anything with it.

Mete, may I ask how it was determined that the case hardening was not done well?
