Brownell's list two types of power checkering head for use with a Foredom tool. One is made by Doiron at $600 and the other doesn't say and costs $470.

Anybody use these, does either have an advantage over the other?

This is not for my own use, my smith said if I organise him one, he'll turn me out a nice stock in English for my 25-06. He wanted one made by MMC, but I don't see it listed.

Cheers

pete

I'm not sure the MMC is still available....I shelled out $1,100 for mine complete with foot pedal. It's a fabulous tool!!! Mine is electric with carbide cutters.

I got the MMC. The air powered one costs more. My concearn with the air one was two fold. First, it runs super fast. I generally runs my MMC at less than top speed. Second, My compressor is super loud. If I were making a carefull cut and it came on I might flinch and screw up the job. The air powered one is supposed to be a botter tool though, I will never find out. I am quite happy with the MMC.

MMC is the old name. They no longer sell the checkering head.

The new name with the same owner, (long Story), is M-2

Rob's father started MMC years ago.

I spoke to Rob at the Guild show this past January about my older MMC head and he serviced it for me last month.

The head I have is 30 years old now and has only been serviced twice. I have cut lots of steel with it and even more gunstocks.

Although Jim Wisner's recommendation should carry more weight than mine, I have the DoIron unit and it works fine. I talked to the tech guys at Brownells and as I remember they said that the DoIron was more "Industrial" use. You might call and talk to the Brownells guys as well as the ones Mr. Wisner has reccommended. Good Luck...............DJ

Jeffe, puny foredom????? I got the foredom binford turbo 2000, it easts craftsman power heads for lunch Smiler

I don't know that Jim is recommending the MMC or just stating that he uses one. That is the one that I use but if I were buying new, I would buy an electric Doiron model. Maurice Ottmar switched from a MMC to the air driven one and liked the tool but it kept breaking down on him. I don't know if he just had a bum one, but they kept repairing it for him at no cost.

I do still like my MMC.

djpaintless, missed you in Tulsa this weekend. I can't wait to show you the Nelson 250-3000 on a Kurtz action. It makes my other 250 Savage pale by comparison. When will you get home again?

Most peopl use them, and if your in the stock making business its probably a must...I borrowed Jack Belks one time and that SOB slung wood chips and screamed at me...I shuddered, went into cold sweats and finally I took it back.

It takes me about 30 hours or so to checker a stock, but I not on anyones time clock..Along with that goes headaches at my age so I do only a little at a time or hire it out in some cases..
