Pa nor says they'll barrel it and all. But will it feed ? The cartridges will fit in the internal mag well except the 800gr but those have no real velocity anyhow. Will the .550 work with the rails ? Any mark v smiths here ? Mpi says hey can make their mountain style stock for me

Once upon a time, there were people who, when professionally installing barrels onto actions, made sure that the chosen round would feed. They were called gunsmiths... You would think that PacNor would assure you of that before accepting the job. Ask them. Myself I don't see why it wouldn't feed since it is basically a straight belted case. It might require a little tweaking because the round resembles a flashlight, but I don't believe it to be an insurmountable project. Be sure to furnish them some un-primed dummies. _______________________________________________________________________________ This is my rifle, there are many like it but this one is mine. Pacnor said the action would work but they didnt know the length if the magazine . I told them ive found the. 550 was short enough with 700gr they said then the action is good to go. I havnt bought the action yet. Im pretty dead set i want a mark v acti. Im waiting to hear back feom gila gun works about if they think this is a good idea. If not i can always get a mrc ph action.

and that is exactly who should be doing the job. not a barrel manufacturer

Agree with the above; but not many gunsmiths have the reamer. Brockman did at one time. Since the 550 Mag is a 460 Weatherby case blown out almost straight, I would think the work would be minimal as long as it was a 378 or 460 WBy MkV action to begin with. COL is about the same. Probably adjust the mag lips and maybe tweak the ramp for the fat 55 caliber bullets. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

I think a guy could almost do that one with a boring bar. _______________________________________________________________________________ This is my rifle, there are many like it but this one is mine. My rifle is my best friend, it is my life.

You can probably get a .378 rifle / action on the cheap.

I've had PacNor install several of their barrels on my actions, and not once did I expect them to be responsible for whether it would feed or not. I figure it's my responsibility to make sure it feeds ok, or will feed with a little work. I have never been unhappy with that arrangment. The thing is they will prefit, headspace, cut the chamber, threads, contour, crown, and other services, using their blank and reamer. I always get the action at least close before seriously considering a barrel anyway. the bolt face at least needs to be right, and it's best to do the truing work too. I want to see that it feeds before spending the money to do the barrel. I have made two or three mistakes assuming that I can get it to feed after the barrel is installed. It's called clarity of expectations. It's a rare commodity in my experience when working with gunsmiths. I expect PacNor to make an excellent barrel and if requested install it correctly. That's what they are in business for. I expect nothing more and nothing less. If I expect more, then I set myself up for dissappointment, and it ain't their fault. Blaming PacNor for something that they don't even do is unreasonable. Shilen and Douglas install barrels. Do they make it feed too? If I go to a gunsmith who says he can make it feed, then that's the deal - make it feed, and so forth. If I go to a gunsmith who says he can correctly install a barrel and make it feed - well you get the picture, hopefully. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Here after all these years I just assumed that part of the rebarreling process was assuring that the intended cartridge would feed. Sorry to have inconvenienced you... Carry on. _______________________________________________________________________________ This is my rifle, there are many like it but this one is mine. It's not an inconvenience at all, but a worthy topic, IMO. You are correct in your assumption, in the way you worded it. It's just a question of who assures the intended cartridge will feed, but somebody has to do it. IMO, the answer depends on the meshing of the expectations of the customer and the gunsmith. It's more of a personal thingy with me. I have on several instances just turned over an action to a gunsmith (not PacNor) for barreling, with the ASSUMPTION that he would also ensure that it fed properly. Upon receiving the so-called finished rifle, disappointment ensued. In each instance, the rifles never did feed right, and I ended up getting rid of them. So now, with one exception still out there, I make sure myself that it's gonna feed to my satisfaction before the barrel. Quarrels with gunsmiths and disappointments re feeding are eliminated that way. Kabluewy, Interesting that you said this, I have never thought as a gunsmith that feeding was an optional part of the job. I have turned down a number of jobs just because I was unsure of the amount of work to get them to feed properly. Likewise I have lost a number of jobs because of the work it would require to get the rifle to feed correctly. I just assumed that was all part of the game. Of course, I have had jobs where I get a receiver, a barrel, and a stripped bolt. Not too much you can do, but I at least try to make sure it will feed. I too have sent guns to more than one technician for different purposes. It costs a lttle extra in shipping but can save time. For example I'm happy to let the barrel maker screw on the barrel and then send it to Dennis Olson or someone of similar skill just to make the feeding right. SInce I do my own stocking and metal finish I almost never commission a complete rifle anyway. There, Kabluewy...I'm on your side for once! All i had to do to my MKV 510 Wells was adjust the mag lips a bit. I did this on a 378 and a 460 also so its no big deal. I am interested to hear if this works as i wanted to do this to my action when I went with 510. If its no issues then I might find another to build.
