My Montana action (standard) is coming back from the barrel makers next week. It will have a new custom stock made for it early next year (I am on the stockmakers "next-in-line" list). Is there a standard type stock I can fit it in temporarily in order to work up some loads? Obviously I won't get my best accuracy with a sort of "make do" arrangement, but I can at least chronograph loads, etc., so that when the stock is done I am ready to go. Suggestions? Thanks, Garrett

I don't know what "cheap" may mean to each person but Richards microfit has some under $150.... IV minus 300 posts from my total (for all the times I should have just kept my mouth shut......)

I think an inexpensive Model 70 take off stock might work for you. There are always a few listed on ebay. If that won't work, you might want to order a cheap Boyd unfinished laminate or hard wood stock. If memory serves me right they start at less than $100. I got a couple of M70 SA's on ebay for $35, will require a bit of work, but not much more than bedding it would have I think. Rob

Do not buy a Richard's stock. They are not anywhere near inletted enough to use as a test bed for load development. Mine required about $700 in work to bed the action. They come with great amounts of extra wood; the bolt on mine cannot be removed without removing the action from the stock. The laminated ones are very hard and will require great amounts of sanding, grinding, rasping and chiseling to make them work. I won't ever buy another one.

The bottom metal will require different inletting, as will the tang and the bolt release. Nothing major, but not a drop-in operation either. I should be possible to make a M70 stock work, though. That is how most stock manufacturers have catered for M1999s until now. - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... I picked up a B&C Win70 LA for my 1999. The floorplate inlet needed modification, but that was pretty much it. I paid $50 for it.

Garrett, For what you are talking about, get the cheapest wood stock you can find and just hog out the inletting a bit with a dremmel tool, and epoxy the barreled action and bottom metal in it for your testing. That will give you a good, solid platform for your barreled action...and who cares what it looks like.

Boyd's has stocks for the M1999 for about $60. I hear they are pretty decently finished and inletted.
