Basicly what I want to know is what is the lightest barrel I can safely run a .358 Win with? I want to keep this barrel short and light but still want enough metal to surround the bullet. Can I get buy with a barrel that finishes under .600 at the muzzle?

Not sure about the rest of the world but I was told some time ago that barrel wall thickness at the muzzle should not be less than .100 (assuming modern steels)

In the case of the .358 a barrel diameter of .558 would be a minimum.

Ruger made some extremely thin barrels for their ultralight some time ago.....and as I understand those barrels were heat treated for tensile. I wouldn't allow those barrels to set a standard for other barrels.

One of the custom barrel makers list the max caliber the will sell for their barrel contours. Do a websearch of Shilen, pac-nor etc.

Did just that and I so far only ER Shaw has listed that they will not do a .358 caliber at .600 or less muzzle diameter. Haven't found anyone else list minimum calibers for taper. I'd like my barrel to finish at 20" around 2.5 lbs or less. Just wanted to know if my goal was unrealistic?

How much the muzzle diameter is is a mostly worthless measurement. What is of far more importance is the chamber wall thickness.

Just for reference, LW offers their art 718 in 9,3x62 and the muzzle is .590".

Many barrel manufacturers seem to think that .100" wall thickness at the muzzle is the minimum. Doubles measure much less. If you want thinner you may consider having the barrel turned to the desired contour.

Jeff....I just looked and the lightest contour that Douglas offers a .358 is #3....I'd like to get lighter contours as well....Does IT&D get specials from Douglas?....or can I order a #2 from Douglas as a special?

A #2 would make the 2 1/2 pound target fairly easily. I'd like lighter contours in the .375 caliber as well.....

+1

I have a Sako/FN in 375 that has a muzzle dia of about .580". Is is nice and light.

I think .100 wall at the muzzle is about right as a "sensible minimum".

Thanks Mike, that answered a lot. I've got a Savage SA that needs a barrel and I'm just thinking I want a .358 Win 20" barrel and around 7lbs before scope.

Dave at ITD contours his own from Douglas blanks. He gets Douglas barrel blanks and does the rest himself. He is very accomodating on custom contours etc.

Airgun1.....thanks....that's good to know as I often want a lighter contour when I rebarrel anything over 30 caliber...

I was told by Danny Pederson that minimum barrel wall thickness should be no less than 0.100-inch for rounds that operate at SAMI max pressures of rounds like the .30-06 and 0.125-inch is better for higher pressure rounds. This is consistent with the thin barrels on the drillings I have owned.

He wouldn't go longer than 20.. i had wanted 23 .. he said "then it will be a number 3" .. which meant the length made the wall thickness

My factory Ruger M77RS 35 Whelen goes .560" at the muzzle. Ciff LaBounty required .10" a side when he rebored, about what Ruger provided.
