Well, we have talked about this several times, and I figured since I was working on an enfield today that I would just take some pictures to show


perhaps this will help

Sorry for the poor pics, my "shop cam" isn't the best...

you can do several things to get the barrel where it will run in your lathe... removing the sights is how *I* choose to do it...

sharpen your parting tool (heh)
have the action turning true (you CAN face the action here, but it's better to do this with a mandrel that runs better)

make a parting cut "right at" the edge of the barrel and action.



Then, I use a brass rod for a drift, and one sharp RAP and the barrel turns off by hand

as for the lip, well, these pictures are NOT great quality, but you can get the point

I have a greater understanding of chip board than I did before I saw this. If you can focus on the background, you probably can on the subject.

three settings.. photo, off, movie, .. no zoom... fixed focus.

Thanks for the photos I got a p14 for under $50 the other day. Its a drill rifle. Gonna strip her down in a bit. Ill most likely remove the barrel the same way.

Mabe an idea to tell people that this is NOT a way to remoove Mauser barrels?

Double check the pin location and make sure you aren't cutting it with the parting tool. If so use a carbide cutter. I learned this the hard way.

it became my first 500 AR.... i thought i had some pics from further along than these, from oct..

anyway, i'll som some more pics in a month or so... working out the last of the feeding, and starting to work on my double rifle

What did you use for bottom metal on it?

I just picked up a Rem and a Win that were sporterized...still trying to figure out what calibers I want to build.
I was thinking something in a .416 and maybe .458 Lott...
What are your thoughts?

thanks - mauser bottoms can be modifed to fit.. this one is a parker hale 1100M casting and a williams floorplate that i HEAVILY modifed to fit ...
you could use a numrich, sunny hill, blackburn, etc... if you are willing to make your own stock.

do NOT bother with the numrich 300 HH sheet metal box.. it's soft and junk...

a 416 rem and 458 lott are nice choices... or 458lott and 510wells

thanks, it probably looks better in pics than in real life.. i do okay, and on an inspired day, i get all the way into "passingly good" but it doesn't last long... and with the works of guild level masters to compare to,... well, i mostly hid my stuff!

welded up the rear screw hole, redrilled and countersank at an angle, "normal" mods to make certain the trigger worked.... slightly wider and deeper slot....

that's about it... and we are sorting out the feeding, as i just stuck it together to get load dev work..

600gr at 2300+, 535 at 2450+, though I think 100fps slower would be perfect for these

Thanks for the response and info. I've heard of using the 03' guard but havent done it. Roger Biesen has profiled some stocks for me and I have been pleased, so I think he would cut a blank for a set like this, sure save a lot of work and time. I got a Douglas 458 blank that I was thinking of turning into a 460 but I might rethink it.

Roger makes a good stock.... thanks for the compliments, but i am not certain this rifle deserves the attention.. its a mule that i put together to verify my 500 ar ...

my personal 416 AR, on a springfield, usesd a blackburn 338winmag mauser bottom metal... it was even easer.

If you have Roger turn you a stock, be certain to send him your bottommetal, so he can inlet for it.. if you try to use the normal enfield pattern, the mag/bottom will be vastly too large

I used a +2 cheapo reading glass lens to take closeups with the first digital camera I used. Worked fine at about 1 ft away--try one.
