Did Roy and Co. build some rifles on FN Mauser actions? If so what is the scoop on them? Are they basically a 98 or of a different design altogether?

Roy Weatherby's first,I think, rifles were built on FN actions. They are referred to as his "Southgate Weatherby's" I am not sure how may he made but he then went to SAuer for his custom actions. Roy also made some on Mod 70 actions, but I think most of those were sent to him by customers.

I have 2 Wby's built on FN. A 300 and 375.The stocks don't look anything like the one pictured in the Gunbroker ad. Both actions are opened up at the front and feed good from the magazine. They have more 'character' than the Jap Wby but I doubt they are any more gun. Mark A liberal is someone who feels a great debt to his fellow man, which he proposes to pay off with your money. I seem to recall that Roy Weatherby started out as a gunsmith in his garage back in the late 40's. I've seen several of his pre-Mark V rifles built on FN (commercial) actions. I've never seen one built on a M98 but he probably did.

35404 is correct. You used to see a lot of these years ago, I suppose in the 60's. They were FN's with an ugly stock IMO. I like the FN actions, although I own one Mk V a .257 that is a great shooter in a neat mulie and antelope caliber. A shot not taken is always a miss

A cousin had one that was his fathers. A semi custom 257 Roberts. He also had letters for his dads corespondence with Roy Weatherby when he had the rifle built. Not sure when the rifle was built but his dad died in the late 50's

Yes, Roy Weatherby made his rifles on FN Mauser actions up and thru the mid 1950s, I just sold one with complete provenance from Weatherby. You can see the FN action Weatherby's in the old Weatherby catalogs, including John Wayne with one in his hands, also the Shah of Iran. LLS

I recently saw a particularly nice one at Mike Schrank's Smoke N Gun in Waukegan IL. It was a 300 Wby. Mehul Kamdar "I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them."-- Patrick Henry

What other actions Roy used, i dont know. But he did som eksperimenting with actions from Mattheu arms, and mutch of dhe development of the real Weatherbycalibers was done on Schultz & Larsen m54 actions, before he bourght a testorder of appx. 500pcs of SchultZ & Larsen m56A actions marked Weatherby. But ther was some disagrements between the two companies, so there was onely delivered appx. 150pcs. Some 100pcs is still in stock by the Danish producer Shortly after Roy started buying markV actions from Sauer
