Anyone convert M-98 to take AR-15 mags?

I know, this is an oddbal project, but I have an M-98 turk that isn't good for much other than a single shot, or a magazine conversion. Chalk it up to one of the learner actions we all butcher, and for all of $40 it was both a cheap and priceless learning curve. Big Grin

Anyhow, I've been toying with the idea of ringing the bolt and building up the extractor to make a 223 out of it for the kids as a beater gun. I was going to just put a plate in teh bottom of the mag to make it a single shot, then I thought, why not just make it take ar mags? Not that I need 20 round mags, but it shouldn't be that much more work, and would be kinda neat as a plinker.

Paul,

If you mean an AR15 20 magazine, then I think it may be quite difficult. My reason it that the magazine has lips on it that protrude into the carrier of an AR15/M16 and thusly the carrier is deeply grooved for it. Here's the problem for a bolt rifle, like your 98 Turk. The bolt turns, the AR15/M16 carrier don't. Don't confuse the carrier with the bolt, as the bolt does turn on an AR15/M16. You would have to use a magazine that doesn't have lips protruding more then the built in rails in the 98 action. Maybe a magazine out of a bolt rifle that uses them such as CZ's 223 rifle. Good luck with your project.

Well that answers that, but the mini 14's bolt is different then an AR15, so that's probably the reason the fellow used it. Good know

I would think the reason to use a Mini-14 mag over an ar15 would be because an ar15 clips and latches in from the side and a Mini-14 hooks in the front and latches in the back making the conversion much easier.

Thanks for the replies so far. I'm thinking, as I haven't tried it yet, that the AR mag could work so long as the lips are just under the bolt. The top of the round still pops up a bit out of the mag, and the bolt still rides down slightly into the mag. Though I'll have to prove to myself it can or can't be done first.

Sounds like a lot of time and effort just to get some use out of a $40 action.

Paul, the kids would benifit from the single shot option. Learn to make the first shot count. Also this would save you a lot of head aches trying to fit a AR-15 mag. Chamber it for 308, load it light with 125gr'ers. When they learn how to deal with some recoil, load'er up, so they can use it on bigger game.

Yeah but, the kids will learn a heck of alot more seing a gun go together then they will by just going to the store and buying them one.

Hog killer, I loaded some mild 110's in the .308, and that was still a bit stiff for them, hence setting them up with a .223. I also have a line on an NEF .223 youth rifle, so they'll likely use that a bit more while working out the bugs on the mauser.

Sarco sells a copy of a WW1 20 round trench magazine for a 98 Mauser. They've been selling them for at least ten years. The last time I saw one in an ad they said they were almost out of them.
