It seems like a few years ago, I was reading that you could buy a Weatherby internal mag used in the 378-460 Mk 5's to use when building a Rigby based wildcat. It seems like it was a two round single stack. I looked on Weatherby's site but could not find it, anyone have a clue as to where I could get one?

From Weatherby or one their dealers.

It is not a single stack in the normal way. The magazine is a fair bit wider than the cartridges but instead of feeding from left and right side they feed in line. The top of the magazine box has two large lips on either side which causes a centreline feed.

If you post on Big Bores I am sure RIP will have a photo of one.

It is also available as deeper version which holds three rounds and it extends just slightly below the stock on a Mark V. From memory that is standard on the DGR which you will see on the Weatherby site.

The follower is dead flat.

I tried using this .. it looked something like this .. you could buy a 2 or 3 round for the x460 based things .. i don't recall that it worked out for anything other than a pattern ...

this is the wrong caliber -- but i didn't find anything larger on their current website

I tried a 460 magazine "liner" but it did not work for the 416 Rigby. The lips appear to be at the wrong angle. The front of the 416 would tip up as it went up the chamber ramp causing the rear of the cartridge to tip down. This let the bolt slide over the cartridge base instead of feeding the cartridge. I have not had time to mess with it since but I to would be interested in anyone who has made this conversion.

Jeff, I figured you would be the one that had tried it. gbs, can you tell me where you got the mag liner? I will give WTBY a call, as I cannot find it on their website.

That's interesting. Certainly the Rigby is more tapered but those lips are tight. In fact the way you load a 378 based Mark V is open the floor plate and drop the rounds in. Pushing round down the top is not easy. I have had all the 378 based Mark Vs, including three 460s and seven 378s.

I would have also though the lack of the belt on the Rigby would mean the base would come up higher as Rigby is about .580 on the base and belt is about .620 on the base.

I am assuming the Rigby tipped upwards before the rear of the case entered the lips of the magazine.

Once again, it just goes t show you never can tell when it comes feeding.

Call Weatherby and ask them for the part no. for a magazine box for a Mk V 338 Lapua. The Lapua is much closer in body dimensions to a 416 Rigby than the big Weatherby cases are.

If it's different than the 378/460 box then just order it. If it's not then there is something wrong with the box you have.

I do not have the part number for the box. When I ordered it from Weatherby they would not sell it as a spare part without a serial number for a 460 so I gave them the serial number for a 460 I had at the time but which I no longer have.

With the 460 box installed and the rounds loaded, as you push the bolt forward the case is picked up. As the bullet rides up the feed ramp at the chamber the round tips up at the front and the base of the case moves down in the magazine (Front of the box lips acting as a fulcrum.). As this happens the base of the case moves down far enough for the bolt to slip over the case. As I said I have not had time to mess with this but it appears I need to do some work on the magazine lips to get it to feed.

If it is for one of the smaller Wbys, that is, not a 378 based Wby then the follower will look like what you would normally see in a bolt action and the box will have tabs on it as as opposed to lips that are almost the length of the magazine an the follower is flat.
