I am wondering who out there offers custom bolt releases for Model 70's. I have seen some very nice ones on custom riles in the past and I am wondering where I can get my hands on a couple.

If anyone has any pics they could share it would be very appreciated.

If I am not mistaken most guys either add enough metal with a tig welder, or they take a small piece of steel and just weld it to the top of the bolt release. then they do a little filing and shaping and checker it. I don't think they make a whole new piece.

Jim Wisner once offered these, but I am not sure if he does now.

Write a note to Chuck Nelson and ask him to show you photos of the Model 70 that Bill Leeper did for him. On that rifle he welded metal to the bolt stop and checkered it.

And, while I don't think you can send your guns across the border, I think you can send parts across the border. So you could probably take your bolt release off, send it up to Bill, he could do it up for you, and send it back.

Wisner's still makes them.

They are about $55, milled from bar stock, slightly thicker than the original, checkered, blued, and excellent in every way.

The custom bolt stops I make are the late Dale Goens shape. They are a wider flared pad and still clear the stock. They are avaiable in smooth or checkered.

NOTE they only are made for the Winchester M 70 actions made before 1964.
They will not fit the current USRA Classic M70.

I wish you made them for the new M70 Classic.

I've made them in the past. I leave the finger pad as a block, for file shapeing and checkering. I found that wincester B.S. gets porosity in it when welding. It's faster for me to just machine one the way I want it.

22WRF sums it up quite nicely. It just seems like a waste to spend so much on a custom M70 and then to have that plain and cheap looking release on it.
