Is one better than the other for a beginner? I want to bed barrel and action on a Sako .223.

Cheers.

Use the gel if you're going to go with Acra Glass. The other is runny and will get all over everything. The runny stuff is good for fixing cracked stocks where you need it to run into the crack.

gel.. here's why...

glas has a viscosity of ~10... it runs like HOT HOT syrup..

gel is more like out ofthe fridge old syrup.. neither stays EXACTLY where you put it, but the glas will run down and out of your stock, making a mess...

i use the glas for repairs

I used Acra-Glas on my first couple bedding jobs. I fought with it the whole time, thinking that those guys that said bedding a rifle was easy were nuts!

Since that experience, I moved on & tried other stuff. I have not used an Acra-Glas product in close to 20 years.

I've settled on Marine-Tex. I'm very happy with it.

However, if I just HAD to use any Acra-Glas stuff, it would DEFINITELY be the gel. I've never used it, but it HAS to be better and easier than the "original" stuff.

I have to agree on the marine tex, its good stuff, especialy for synthetic stocks, I keep both white and gray. For wood stocks where you have to match color I think the acra glas is best. I use the original acra glas, but thicken it with west marine 404 flock and for a big bore I mix in atomized SS powder, that way I can get it as thick or thin as I want. If I'm going to glue an ebony tip or something like that I will leave it thin.

Devcon is good too

Acraglas does not have to be runny.
I always mix in Floc, which is like fiberglass fibers like in insulation and it thickens right up.
Brownells sells it and it does the trick.

I never liked the gel, it always seemed too springy to me, like vinyl.

I have the same opinions about the Gel.

I use extra floc also. It can be purchased @ Brownel's. The little packet that comes with the "kit" is hardly enough to do a small repair job let alone bed a whole barreled action.

I mix in enough floc so that it will "stand". It is the fiber in the floc that gives the high compression resistance. Much better than the gel.

The epoxy will still ooze, but modeling clay dams and masking tape will control this.

You guys need to do yourselves a favor and check out Probed-2000. After trying a bunch of different bedding products I have to say this stuff is the best of the bunch. And it's made locally, by a gunsmith here in Albuquerque. Check out www.probed2000.com

Dumb questions:

Exactly which Marine Tex product are you guys referring to? The website lists several.

Also, which Devcon? There's a slew of varities I think?

Thanks

Great info - thanks guys. Looks like the Gel will be the go for my first attempt. Dan if it were a heavy kicker I would take your advice and get the steel bed - might get some anyway for future use.

Cheers.
