Are the synthetic stocks Ruger uses in their 77 hawkeyes stout enough to support a varmint weight barrel free floated?

I but a 25" 416 barrel on one without trouble. I have reinforced savage stocks for varmint rifles. But they are a lot weaker then Ruger's I would have no trouble doing it.

to be more specific, I have a factory .220 Swift (Hawkeye) with the 26" barrel. The stock is their laminated target stock with beavertail forend: it is Heavy. plus it doesn't fit my shooting sticks well with that forend. I thought this might be an inexpensive way to reduce a pound or so and get a better forend fit with the sticks. thanks

I don't think the boat paddle stocks look that bad at all, I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Dennis Life member NRA

I bet the newest molded Ruger stocks are built from Zytel, same as the old "canoe paddle" stocks. They remain my favorite on serious using rifles as their I beam construction makes them tougher than woodpecker lips. The new ones with the outside shell do flex. My daughter's 375 Ruger continues to flex enough to batter the top half of the magazine box, bending it enough to cause malfunctions. And I filled the section in front of it with Devcon ! That old boat paddle stock was and is the toughest stock ever made I suspect, and its truly the work horse of rifle stocks, if your guns goes empty you could beat the brains out of a cape buffalo with one..or if you need a crow bar in an emergency you have one handy an you won't even disturb your POI Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com
