What to do with an Arisaka 99 action

I have a complete action and need some idea what to do with it (ya I know build a rifle) but what caliber. Since it is not a Mauser it looks like the possibilities are endless. Does the lower tang get shortened or inletted into the pistol grip. As you can tell I have never used this action before.
So pictures would be helpful besides you can show off your work as well as helping me.

Done them; last one I did was a 308 about 2 years ago.
Throw all the tangs away; you don't need them.
Barreling is like a Rem 700 on steroids; the bolt head extends 2/3rds of the way into the barrel shank.
Super strong; PO Ackley proved you can't blow them up. I tried once on one my friend found in a trash dump in 1968; we just blew primers.
Cartridge? literally anything, but if you want it to fit the bolt face as is, and feed, then pick something appropriate.
It would be more informative if Rog would post his thoughts here.

Many complain about the cock on closing feature, but I think I have actually grown to prefer it OVER cock on opening actions.
Either is no big deal unless one chooses to make it one.

I tell everyone: Cock on closing ain't broken!
It actually was done for a valid reason; when it was developed it's purpose was to place all the opening effort on primary extraction only; saving the cocking effort for another time. Because of the early brass cases would sometimes tend to stick, also the shooter might be in dirty conditions. Hence the British Enfield series including the #3s, were all cock on closing.
Work fine as is.
(What is a #3 Enfield? Not a Lee. It is the P14)

Does anyone know how well the 9.3 x 62 would fit in the type 99 magazine box?

I think the mag box would have to be at least 3.4" inside.
Don't know what length an M99 box is...if too short, maybe go with 9.3x57...you could stoke it up pretty well in that action tu2

Definitely throw the tangs in the trash; not needed and look goofy.
No a 9.3x62 won't fit.

Sink about $2,000 into the project. At the end of it, someone will be sure to offer you $500.00 for the thing.

The thing is, the economic rationale decision is to spend far less, say, buy a Winchester M70 Supergrade, $1,300, https://www.budsgunshop.com/pr...+1+grade+iv+v+walnut or an Winchester M70 extreme weather $1,100, https://www.budsgunshop.com/pr...+1+grade+iv+v+walnut

And you have a modern rifle, made out of modern materials, and it is a known item, unlike some odd ball wartime action that only a few know about. Be a lot less money, and you will get a better resale value.

With a modern rifle you won't have the romance of owning a historic piece of scrap iron. But, romance, and $1.50 will buy a cup of coffee.

Don't you love it when some ..... says just buy a new gun, don't muck around with that old crap....also we are generally not interested in resale value, that's not why we build them.

We are looking for information, not alternatives or an easy way out.

Sorry, one of my pet peeves....carry on.

Makes far more sense to buy a new modern rifle.

When one can buy it for about the price of a good barrel.

Unless you can't because of some stupid law.

But who never said gun cranks work with common sense.

Please don't feed SF. Like trolls, if you don't feed them, they will stay under the bridge where they belong. Nothing useful or constructive to offer, talking strictly about bridge trolls of course.
And buying new rifles has NOTHING to do with building projects. Anyone can buy a rifle.

Do you shoot your rifles, or do you make love to them?

And you are the one selling the sporterizing, because you make money doing that. Well, a fool and his money are soon parted.

Chopping up old military actions and converting them to sporters was and is always cost prohibitive, and that, in the long run, is your doom. You probably have a closet full of old actions you paid $70.00 for, and you are hoping to sell all of them for $300.00 and receive the thousands to build them into a full rifle. So you are selling the dream. Phooey on dreams.

There is a market for all original, all complete military bolt actions, they are selling very well. Sporterized military actions, put a lot of money in, have very little value out. Might as well as buy crypto currencies and lotto tickets, they could pay off.

I think the smart thing to do with an Arisaka action, is sell it for parts. There are always owners of all original rifles looking for parts.

There is the other part, some might not know.

Glad you asked; no I am not a shooter; rarely shoot rifles. Maybe once a year or so. I don't like noise.
And, Yes I do have a room full of those old military Mausers. I have every variation of Kar98K made, including the VK98s. Only good thing they are for is busting them down for actions and throw all those nazi marked stocks in the trash. No one wants those.
As for 35 Whelen; mag is too short. 358 win.
Good thing about Jap actions; you can't blow them up no matter how stupid you are at reloading, unlike Mausers, which will come apart with starting loads.

Not to me..... I would not fit them for any amount because the end result looks like an Arisaka!
Their only purpose is to reinforce the stock during a vertical butt stroke; which I try to avoid whilst hunting.

I don’t know Arisakas, but is that the gas port on top?
When you put the scope base over it you should add another one maybe?
