I'm trying to decided between a sweated on vs screwed on front sight. How much metal thickness do I need for the screw on? As usual just my $.02 Paul K

I've tapped threads in win-70 featherweight barrels with .10 metal thickness. I do it by dialing it in on the mill and drill the point to within .020 of thru.....I use two taps.... one is ground for true bottoming which gives me another two threads or so..... That's about the thinnest barrel I've tapped.....it works fine however. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." The rule I apply when drilling and tapping a barrel is minimum thread depth for a #6 screw is .120, and, absolute minimum distance between the bottom of the hole and the bore, .050. Anything less than this is just asking for trouble. _______________________________________________________________________________ This is my rifle, there are many like it but this one is mine. Ok I missure .124" by measuring and removing the caliber and dividing by 2. So I would be safe with screws. If I want any thinner I should really go with a sweated on. As usual just my $.02 Paul K
