ramrod340How much barrel needed for a front sight screw?
I'm trying to decided between a sweated on vs screwed on front sight. How much metal thickness do I need for the screw on?

vapodogI've tapped threads in win-70 featherweight barrels with .10 metal thickness.
I do it by dialing it in on the mill and drill the point to within .020 of thru.....I use two taps.... one is ground for true bottoming which gives me another two threads or so.....
That's about the thinnest barrel I've tapped.....it works fine however.

The rule I apply when drilling and tapping a barrel is minimum thread depth for a #6 screw is .120, and, absolute minimum distance between the bottom of the hole and the bore, .050. Anything less than this is just asking for trouble.

ramrod340Ok I missure .124" by measuring and removing the caliber and dividing by 2. So I would be safe with screws. If I want any thinner I should really go with a sweated on.
