I have a few barrels from projects that never happened, and I need some heavy duty packaging (round, square, or triangular).

Brownell's doesn't seem to have them. I need something that will survive UPS' 'tender ministrations'.

Thanks,
George

PVC tub/pipe/conduit with a cap at each end works fine!

Electrical shops, water/irrigation/ plumbing shops all have it.....lots of hardware stores as well!

A friend used a PVC pipe with caps in the ends a small hole drilled in one end , wrapped it with

brown kraft paper and clear tape with the label under the clear packaging tape . It survived everything !.

The USPO has them with end caps, but I think they will only accommodate 24 inch tubes max. Any carpet or fabric store has ton's of tubes of various lengths. Plastic sheeting comes on heavy tubes also.

Vapo had it right. Just get some Schedule 40 PVC. Heck you can glue the end caps on for one time use or get the fittings and have one end glued on and the other screw on. And cheap.

or not even worry about the end caps. stuff the ends with paper so the bbl can't shift and just tripple duct tape em.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

PHOOEY!!
Go to a carpet store and have them give you an used/discarded cardboard core, upon which rugs are wound for transport from the distributor. Use a hacksaw to cut to needed length. These are INDESTRUCTIBLE!! Cap it with anything available....maybe a few layers of round-cut sections of cardboard.

The problem with tubes is that they burst out the ends. When they get dropped, the barrel is just like a jackhmmer bursting out the end caps. You can do two things to stop that. One, wrap the barrel with newspaper until it fits tight into the tube. That way, the friction holds the barrel from sliding.

Two, cut the tube about 4 inches too long. Cram about 2 inches of newspaper in each end, and pack it in very tight. Then, many crosses of tape across the end, and a wrap around to hold it all on.

For secondary backup, get the free priority mailing labels from the post office. Put one with the address info directly on the barrel. That way it will be delivered even after it comes out of the tube.

I have shipped about 120 barrels in the last year. I have lost two out of tubes. One came out of the end. The other the tube came apart. The one with an address label on it was recovered, the other one was not. I've received several packages that I purchased that
the barrel burst out of a tube. Usually it was just using a light tube, and not much packing.

PVC pipe works fine, as stated, but it's heavy and takes time to do.

I've had better luck taking a long piece of carboard, about 6 inches longer on each end than the barrel, and about 8 inches wide. Fold it long ways twice, so that it folds into 3 sections about 2 1/2 inches wide. Put the barrel on it, fold it over, then over again to overlap. Tape the seam. Now, fold the ends over, and I use an industrial duty stapler to staple the flap shut on both ends. Then, wrap the ends securely with tape, and wrap around the package in 2 or 3 places. I've not had a barrel come out of this arrangement.

Something to protect the barrel and sights if they are still on takeoff barrels is pipe wrap from a plumbing department. These are foam wrap used to insulate hot water pipes. Stuff the barrel inside and wrap with tape then into the carpet tube or mailing box. I have even used cardboard taped high and low flat.
The PVC is the strongest and least likely to tear open if the barrel isn't being destroyed inside.

A trip too your local home center for pvc an as suggested foam pipe insulation jacket . Wrap the barrel

just remember to cut two small piece for each end before gluing caps on , a small hole drilled in

the pipe eliminates pressure. Or ask a plumber as he's more than likely got the stuff already .

You can use the same stuff inside a mailing tube also Great protection .
