what does one do for a stock solution if they have a longer neck than average? can one use an echols legend?

My guess is that you would need a stock with a higher comb and cheekpiece. Perhaps a longer pull if your arms are in proportion. You may want to go to a stocker and get fitted.

Fatter comb and fatter cheekpiece also work well if achievable. It's easy to add material to a synthetic stock but not so easy for preshaped wood (grin). BTW IMO almost all US stocks are too short, ESPECIALLY the shotgun stocks. Since you have a long neck then you may also benefit from a longer length of pull, say around 14". getting hit by thumb or scope? then LOP is too short ... how thick is your recoil pad? this is the easist way to add some LOP .. opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? i appreciate the replies. actually, the question comes from here: i recently got hold of a vz-24 with an er shaw barrel (26") in 35 whelen in what turned out to be a B&C stock. measured LOP was 13.5 and it handled so well i hardly noticed the barrel length. i finally realized the LOP I have had at 14" is too long. my dad and I have the same size pant leg but he has a longer torso and is quite a bit bigger through the chest. I am about to give a deposit for an echols legend stock and am thinking to build a companion rifle next winter for dad using the same stock. im wondering about fit since he has a longer neck than I and the echols fits me pretty well. jeff

I notice you and J.D. are at opposite extremes of the country. That may partly account for his view that most stocks are too short, and your view that your old stock was too long. Ideally, stock fitting might best be done when you are wearing the clothes you most often wear in the field. In colder areas (such as Maine), hunting clothing is usually thicker, and in warmer areas (the deep South) it is usually thinner. Sometimes, though not always, the difference can be significant when mounting the gun. Still, muscle memory is very important, so I'd say your dad's build AND his by now hard-wired gun handling habits both will affect how well he likes a particular stock. Only he can answer that question, and then only after he has personally tried various ones for "feel". My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

I noticed this myself years back especially in Shotguns . I also agree with AC on clothes ,T shirt or wind breaker isn't layered clothing in real hunting situations especially where Snow is a factor : IE Gloves in the trigger well, most of us have been there !. I personally prefer 14.75" my arms resemble low land gorillas ,some people have made reference as too my face also sharing that trait without pigmentation !. Some folks go out and purchase stocks or have them made ( boy does that get COSTLY with a battery of Rifles and Shotguns !!!) Myself ;I just add decent looking spacers with a thicker Butt Pad or Magnum Pad ,either alone or in combination for utility purposes. Contrary to Popular opinions one size Doesn't fit ALL !. An if you don't believe that Ask any Lady you care too !!!. Hey get your minds out of the gutter just ask one !.
