ok, now what to get? lol whats the best place to get a m700 action? I have a model 700 rifle, but i would rather not sacrifice my less-than-year-old deer rifle for my target rifle.... i want matchgrade or better barrel, a good trigger assembly, muzzel brake, and a NICE target stock. about how much would this run me including (guesses) gunsmithing. i live in the dallas texas area so if anyone knows any good smiths, lemme know! ------------------ | ||

I just bought another rifle to get an M700 action. I looked for just an action but $350 (includes shipping)was the lowest I could find for a magnum. That's only $10 less than whole rifle cost me. | ||
<Matt in TX> |
where were you looking? i need a short-action, and would prefer to not have to sacrifice my .243 ADL.....
------------------ | ||
<BigBores> |
Matt, It would be cheaper to pick up a used rifle and toss or sell the stock and barrel than to buy just an action, seems weird, but its true. | ||
<Matt in TX> |
ok questions.
ADL or BDL ?? (ADL is cheaper of course) Barrel: where can i get good stocks? i mean, what brands? thanks again ------------------ | ||

A few suggestions, if I may........ You can get the action of your choice at almost any decent gun show. Just give it a really good inspection before you buy. Take along a fellow gun nut, if applicable. For triggers, I have heard that if you want the very best, the Jewell trigger is hard to beat. I believe that Brownell's has them in the catalog. Barrels? Now, we're in the briar patch. Look at, and study the different types of barrels available. Decide if you want button rifled, broach cut, or single-point cut. Each has their advantages, and disadvantages. Do an Internet search for the following barrelmakers: Kreiger (www.kreigerbarrels.com) and read what they have to offer. Stocks? Again, lots of choices. For a great piece of wood, I would look at Wenig gunstocks. For composite, my personal preference is the McMillan offerings, specifically the A2, A3, and A4. Start thinking about a scope, too. There, now I've opened up a can of worms. If you re-post after you've done some looking, all of the merry gun guys (and gals) here will be glad to load your head up with advice. Good luck. ------------------ | ||

Action, should i get a ADL or BDL action??? it will be a while before the gun show comes back, it was here a few weeks ago.... drat.. Barrel, well, I've kinda decided on a Pac-Nor super match, they say they will fit chamber and finish the thing to my action for 200 bucks plus barrell. I am basing this off price and the propaganda they serve up on thier site, feel free to steer me in a different direction of it is deemed neccisary. Trigger? Jewel it is.... (gulp) Scope? Well decided on a Leupold Benchrest, its a 36x40 with AO... and the price is right. Stock... DO you know of a place i can get a McMillan for a RESONABLE price? not in the 400's for a Freakin stock?! I know i'm a cheap bastard, but this is my first custom rifle and i don't want to go absolutely hog wild with it.... thanks for the help as allways! ------------------ | ||
<Powderman> |
Sir, cheap is a GOOD thing. As for stocks, why not buy it direct from McMillan? As a matter of fact, I believe that they will re-stock and bed your rifle for you. Don't remember the URL, but do a search for them. BTW, quality is seldom cheap--you get what you pay for. To paraphrase John Ruskin, it's better to pay for something done right once, than to pay less for an inferior job that must be redone. ------------------ | ||

IMO, go with the ADL, the only drawback is the lack of a hinged floorplate, and you have several options for that (look in Brownells). What type of rifle are you looking to build? Heavy weight varmint? Lightweight deer? African BFG? More people may have suggestions if you give a little more info. | ||

I for got to say where, I bought an ADL in 7mm mag from Wal-mart for $360 so I could use the action. I was told to go with an ADL because most benchrest guns are single shot anyway. The magazine from either action wasn't much use, so ther is no point paying for the BDL floor plate. The following site has good prices on McMillan stocks. www.reamerrentals.com/mcmillan_gunstocks.htm | ||
<Matt in TX> |
guys guys guys, theres actually a little more differance than that. First of all, this will be a benchrest rifle, i'll have a #10 contour barrel, it will be a very heavy gun, but i still might drag the thing out coyote blastin... Ok, the BDL doesn't just have the floorplate, the bolt is jewelled, the magazine itself is a LOT higher quality, the action is a lot smoother than an ADL too. and its high-gloss bluing (not that it matters to me)... SO i might just buy another ADL like my current one and use the action... back to stocks, who else makes synthetic stocks for the mod700 action? thankls for help guys ------------------ | ||

Matt, check the classified section on this board, there was an individual with a mcmillin a3 w/adj cheek piece for 230 + shipping if the color dosen't suit you you can always paint it. also if the smith you choose like remington triggers give him a chance to do a trigger job a lot less expensive and can be real sweet if done correctly.

Dave, i was thinkin the same thing about the trigger actually, hehe, so heres the plan, i go to Wally world or other equivalent and buy a 700 ADL in .308 (a .243 would work for this too right?? same case head and all...), then i get a smith to remove the barrel, (or can this be done by me??). then i send the naked action off to Pac-Nor to be barreled and trued up, and when i get it back, i will have a brand new barrel, from then i what, bed the thing in the stock i decide on? i have never had a bedded rifle stock.. all i've had is an M1 Carbine, my current m700 ADL, and a 870 Shotgun..... none of which have any bedding.. ok this is a bit confrusing for me but i'll figure it out i guess,, thanks for all help guys, if you got any more suggestions, keep'em coming. ------------------ | ||

Matt, Chester's Hunting & Fishing out of New York state has new complete Rem 700 actions and anything else that has to do with REM bolt rifles. Last ADL action I purchased went for $325 if I recall. Be sure to specify what boltface(308 or 223). I will post phone# and address later today.(I'm at my girlfriend's house). I would go with a 12 twist in a 308win for shooting bullets up to 180gr in this little case. sure-shot | ||

Matt, you don't have to remove the barrel before you send it to Pac-Nor, they'll take it off for you and return the old one to you if you tell them. I'd go to wal-mart and buy the short action ADL, take the barreled action out of the stock and send it to Pac-Nor. The last time I had Pac-Nor do a barrel job for me it took 11 weeks to get it back. In the meantime get a mcmillian stock of your choice inletted to your specifications or, and this would be my preference, go to www.boydboys.com and order one of their semi-inletted unfinished warner varmiter laminated stocks for $109 and finish inletting the barrel channel and finish it yourself, it'll already be inletted for the action. The laminate will be almost as stiff as the fiberglass mcmillian, save you about $300, and look a lot better. Get yourself some Marine-Tex for a bedding compound from Brownell's or your local boating supply house and print the article off of the brownell's web site that tells you step by step how to bed a rifle. It's not hard, anyone with basic mechanical ability can do a decent job given a little patience. When the barreled action arrives take it to a gunsmith to have the trigger tuned to your desired weight or have it replaced with a good aftermarket trigger ($), or do it yourself if you're mechanically inclined. Set aside a weekend to stick it all together and you'll end up with a great rifle if you take your time. Good luck. P.S. Call Chris at Pac-Nor and he'll tell you the best twist rate after you tell him how you want to set up the rifle. [This message has been edited by boltman (edited 06-25-2001).] | |||
