Have a look at www.brownells.com. A goldmine for the dedicated gun nut (like us)

whats the best place to get a m700 action? I have a model 700 rifle, but i would rather not sacrifice my less-than-year-old deer rifle for my target rifle....
i want matchgrade or better barrel, a good trigger assembly, muzzel brake, and a NICE target stock.
about how much would this run me including (guesses) gunsmithing.
i live in the dallas texas area so if anyone knows any good smiths, lemme know!

thanks for the info guys

It would be cheaper to pick up a used rifle and toss or sell the stock and barrel than to buy just an action, seems weird, but its true.
Action:
ADL or BDL ?? (ADL is cheaper of course)
Barrel:
Shilen or Pac-Nor ??
where can i get good stocks? i mean, what brands?
thanks again

You can get the action of your choice at almost any decent gun show. Just give it a really good inspection before you buy. Take along a fellow gun nut, if applicable.
For triggers, I have heard that if you want the very best, the Jewell trigger is hard to beat. I believe that Brownell's has them in the catalog.
Barrels? Now, we're in the briar patch. Look at, and study the different types of barrels available. Decide if you want button rifled, broach cut, or single-point cut. Each has their advantages, and disadvantages. Do an Internet search for the following barrelmakers:
Kreiger (www.kreigerbarrels.com)
Hart
Shilen
Lilja
Obermeyer
Douglas
Pac-Nor
and read what they have to offer.
Stocks? Again, lots of choices. For a great piece of wood, I would look at Wenig gunstocks. For composite, my personal preference is the McMillan offerings, specifically the A2, A3, and A4.
Start thinking about a scope, too.
There, now I've opened up a can of worms. If you re-post after you've done some looking, all of the merry gun guys (and gals) here will be glad to load your head up with advice. Good luck.

Happiness is a 200 yard bughole.
Barrel, well, I've kinda decided on a Pac-Nor super match, they say they will fit chamber and finish the thing to my action for 200 bucks plus barrell.
I am basing this off price and the propaganda they serve up on thier site, feel free to steer me in a different direction of it is deemed neccisary.
Trigger? Jewel it is.... (gulp)
Scope? Well decided on a Leupold Benchrest, its a 36x40 with AO... and the price is right.
Stock... DO you know of a place i can get a McMillan for a RESONABLE price? not in the 400's for a Freakin stock?!
I know i'm a cheap bastard, but this is my first custom rifle and i don't want to go absolutely hog wild with it....
thanks for the help as allways!

As for stocks, why not buy it direct from McMillan? As a matter of fact, I believe that they will re-stock and bed your rifle for you. Don't remember the URL, but do a search for them. BTW, quality is seldom cheap--you get what you pay for.
To paraphrase John Ruskin, it's better to pay for something done right once, than to pay less for an inferior job that must be redone.

First of all, this will be a benchrest rifle, i'll have a #10 contour barrel, it will be a very heavy gun, but i still might drag the thing out coyote blastin...
Ok, the BDL doesn't just have the floorplate, the bolt is jewelled, the magazine itself is a LOT higher quality, the action is a lot smoother than an ADL too. and its high-gloss bluing (not that it matters to me)...
SO i might just buy another ADL like my current one and use the action...
back to stocks, who else makes synthetic stocks for the mod700 action?
thankls for help guys

so heres the plan,
i go to Wally world or other equivalent and buy a 700 ADL in .308 (a .243 would work for this too right?? same case head and all...), then i get a smith to remove the barrel, (or can this be done by me??). then i send the naked action off to Pac-Nor to be barreled and trued up, and when i get it back, i will have a brand new barrel, from then i what, bed the thing in the stock i decide on? i have never had a bedded rifle stock.. all i've had is an M1 Carbine, my current m700 ADL, and a 870 Shotgun..... none of which have any bedding..
ok this is a bit confrusing for me but i'll figure it out i guess,,
thanks for all help guys, if you got any more suggestions, keep'em coming.

P.S. Call Chris at Pac-Nor and he'll tell you the best twist rate after you tell him how you want to set up the rifle.
