If I were to have a .416 Taylor built on a M70, would I need to have a second recoil lug attached to the barrel? If not, do you think the Accurate Innovations stock with the aluminum bedding block would take the recoil?

Does the standard .458 Win Mag have a second recoil lug? If not then the 416 Taylor don't need one either. Recoil is somewhat greater in the .458 IMO.

the model 70's used to have a lug fitted to the bbl. the last one i had (controlled feed safari express) did not. rather it had some goofball looking arrangement of a steel strap the recoil lug bedded against that ran forward in the f/e wood. but it never split. i don't think the safari 375's ever had a bbl lug and the 416 taylors recoil is down almost to that level. if you bed it good and use crossbolts behind the lug and thru the stock above/ in front of the trigger i don't think you'd have any trouble.

416 taylor's don't need one.. but it's generally about 50-100 bucks to have one dovetailed in..

i've built taylors as light as 7.5# ... at 2200, recoil is mild

i mispoke on the 375's. i've never had a post 64 in 375 and don't know why i assumed they were lugless. i had a couple of pre's but one was mint and i never shot it. the other had been bedded. my understanding - and i think finn aagard wrote of this as well - the pre-64s in 375 were bad to split their stock.

the recoil lug on my 500 jeffery i just soldered on w/ brownells hi-force 44. it also has screws but before drilling and tapping i decided to relocate it and just for grins tried to knock it off. never did even tho i seriously dented the lug itsel. but it was abt 1"lg x 1" wide and had a huge contact area. mcgowen's i believe used to only charge around $50 for a bbl lug.
