One of our comrades here at AR asked me to bring this MS back to a more original-like state from an old restocking. I don't have any "before" pictures, but when it came to shop the stock had a large "Monte Carlo" cheekpiece, no checkering and no peep sight. I reshape the cheekpiece and grip, giving the grip a much more "open" shape, replaced plastic buttplate and grip cap with horn, refinished the metal and stock, and checkered it. There were quite a few other small items that received attention as well. I believe it was worth the effort.

Yes, for the sharp-eyed observer, it is a pre-64 Winchester sling swivel. I replaced a Pachmyer quick detach that seemed quite inappropriate for this rifle.

Beautiful outcome. I just love those rifles. Great job!

I had a (pre 1924) 1903 model in 6.5X54 - a sporter - with identical peep sight.

You can search the archives for my project on restocking my 1910 9.5X57 MS Take down model.

I wish I could do the checkering.

What model & caliber is the original rifle?

It is a 1903 MS; caliber is 6.5 Gibbs Magnum.

What finish did you use on the stock?

EDITED: I see that the 6.5 Gibbs magnum is a 6.5X57 trimmed to 55mm. I have seen some of your posts on other forums regarding this caliber!

BTW they feed & shoot better with the Round Nosed bullets. However the original SP bullets had a more rounded ogive & not the more modern sleek SP bullets.

Here is the link to my rifle's restock project a few years ago.
