Nice illustration. My point is that none of these cartridges really have a "parent," except that the 7x57 started it all. Here in the US, everything seems to be just a .30-06 necked up or down.

The popular metric cartridges, 7x57, 7x64, 8x57, 8x64 and 9.3x62, 9.3x64 all have different tapers and lengths, giving the impression that they were developed independently of each other (Mauser vs Brenneke).

I wish it had been clearer.

Your last thought and the one on the 06 is as good as any. Who is to say what thought process was used. Heck after a few years even the designers probably don't remember. Besides who is going to say I copied so and so and just made it a little longer. LOL

I tried to close the bolt on a 7x64 cartridge in a 280 chamber, and it wouldn't close.

I havent tried a 280 in 7x64 chamber, but comparing the cases side-by-side, the 280 appears fatter at the shoulder. I suspect the 280 cartridge wont chamber in the 7x64.

All of which is OK. I suspect that Remington checked it out before finalizing the 280 specs, and intentionally made it where the 280 wont go in a 7x64 chamber.

The 280 is in fact .016" fatter at the shoulder. While the neck shoulder of the 64 is .02 shoreter but I bet the slightly steep shoulder angle keeps it from chambering. A quick run in a die would cure either.

I bet with a little increased effort the 7x64 would chamber in the 280.

Red is 7x64 black is 280

Okie dokie, here is what I have. It is a Brno Arms manufacture, proofed in 1998 with the Rampant Lion on both the receiver and barrel. No import marks that I can see.

It is a VZ-24 reciever with sporter barrel, iron sights, barrel sling swivel, low scope handle, and an interesting Brno low scope safety (rocker style). The stock is nicely figured, with a Bavarian rear and a long forearm that ends in a schnabel. The synthetic buttplate has the Brno logo. There is bluing loss near the muzzle and on the bottom of the magazine. It has Leupold QR bases on it that I believe I added.

The only problem is that I cannot get the magazine floorplate back on (military style, except polished blue) and I am not going to screw with it Smiler.

If you remember about 10 years ago, EAA imported some Brno 98's in .30-06 and 270. They had a matte finish, no sights and a plastic stock. This rifle appears to be a nicer version of the same pattern, as the bent bolt handle is identical.

I should be able to take pictures tomorrow, in the daylight.

Blue wear to left side of barrel:

Finish wear to underside. Apparently an attempt to make the floorplate fit better, which it doesn't.

Overall a nice sow's ear with a lot of potential to become a silk purse. It reminds me of one in 9.3x62 that I bought from Frankonia in Germany back in the 90's. Feel free to ask questions. Smiler

That is a nice looking rifle. I'm not into that type butt stock but like you say with a little work a very nice rifle.
