Thought this might be a good forum to pose the question. Mainly looking for some thoughts and opinions on aesthetics. This would not be a high dollar custom job but rather a re-Model of a post-64 Winchester FWT stock with an existing schnable forend tip. In an attempt to dress it up a bit, I was thinking of cutting off the end and shaping a new schnable out of ebony. Probably make it a bit more “beaked” in the Teutonic tradition. Was interested to get reactions from folks here on the idea. From what I can find, seems like this may have been more common on single shots rather than magazine guns. In my cursory searches, I didn’t see a bolt gun with an ebony schnable tip. Of course I realize not everyone likes the schnable styled forend, but interested in comments on the idea. BB

Been done. ebony tip1 - Copy by Rod Henrickson, on Flickr When I was a kid. I had the stick. I had the rock. And I had the mud puddle. I am as adept with them today, as I was back then. Lets see today's kids say that about their IPods, IPads and XBoxes in 45 years! Rod Henrickson

Have you considered an ebony Alexander Henry type tip? To me, they are much better looking.

Who cares what others think; what is important is, do you like it? After all, it will be yours. Now, if you are building it for re-sale, then sure, you want to know if it will sell.

I don’t care for ebony shnables, but an ebony wedge in a shnable looks pretty nice to my eye. Matt FISH!! Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984: "Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

I like Schnabels in general and all variations have some allure. Ebony tipped would be fine, spiked with a wedge is fine too. If you like it have it done. Sounds fine to me.

I'd be happy to own an ebony Schnabel FWT M70. I think it would look dandy If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

I have them on two rifles and am happy with them. One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got into my pajamas I'll never know. - Groucho Marx

Thanks for the input guys. Not that I needed too much of a nudge, but I am going to go forward with this. Will post some pics as I get a chance.

I like Schnabel fore-ends too. Love the stocks on the commercial Husqvarna Mauser rifles. One in ebony would be really cool. Especially on a M70 FWT

I say go for it. They look nice on most rifles, and if they're properly contoured to match the lines of the stock, even an ebony schnable tip would work. Functional, too. _____________________________________________________ No safe queens!

I really like the schnable forend, bug don't care for Ebony schnable forends, if I use Ebony on a forend it will be the standard old forend, and on a slinder stock. But like most things in a gunstock, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, otherwise Weatherby and Art Alfin would be paupers!
