I would like to purchase (2) Remington 798 30-06 rifles and have one re-barrelled to 6.5x55 and the other to 7x57...

I don't have a gunsmith yet but would like to know what does this work entail and its associated approximate cost for choosing to go this route...

Any gunsmithing referals would be appreciated also..

Just PM me if you'd like...

Nothing against the Remington's, but I think it would be a whole lot cheaper to buy CZ mausers in the calibers that you want unless there is some reason you have to have Remingtons.

Yep I hear you...

My problem is I have a new CZ 550FS 6.5x55 and a new CZ 550 FS 7x57 but there just too PRETTY to take in the field...It took me alot of time and patience too afford the rifles...But, lo' and behold I can't bring myself to taking them out where I hunt...

I'd rather sell them/trade for a rifle in GREAT condition in same calibers...

Also, I really like the Mauser 98 actions on the Remington 798, I guess its the same as CD, Interarms Mark X...

Maybe someone got one out there to sale/trade would be my best option!!!

I don't know what your budget is but that FN in the classifieds might be a good place to start.

As for smiths, the guy that posts here as Z1R, would do you up right. First class work. Also, check with him, I believe he may have some actions on hand.

So to keep those rifles nice you are going to spend $8-900 each plus scopes to have another set? Wouldn't be cheaper to buy another set of CZs? If it is the stocks you are worried about get a couple fiberglss ones. I would buy an older Daly or MKX before I would buy a 798.

In your opinion what is the difference between them?

sent you a PM...

I have examined the 798, and it is the WORST fitting stock I have ever seen... at least 1/16 "clearance" all the way around, very rough machining.

You can search Mark X or Daly at places like Gunbroker to find older versions for what is likely less than a new 798. You might even find some on the Classifieds here, perhaps with a WTB ad.

I used to work part time in a gun shop (my retirement hobby job) and had a chance to handle some 798's. As Jeff said Rem. seems to have adopted a new concept - free floating the action. The inletting is absolutely horrible and the action is very rough. The gun is way overpriced given it's lack of quality. I certainly wouldn't pay the $$ they want for that gun just to get a donor action.

Take them out and get some of the finish and bluing worn off them- I shot three mule deer and antelope with an old Heym 7x57; it's a pushfeed, which I don't like. The bolt shroud looks like it belongs on a toaster, IMO. I don't like the stock, either- but when I pick it up and remember crawling through tall grass and dropping the crosshairs on game, it's like money from home.

A good rifle is a tool, and a friend.

I know where there is a real clean Mark X that is either currently a .270 or .30-06. At was there last week anyway. It would make a good platform to rebarrel into 7x57. It's about half what the retail price of the 798's is. Otherwise, I have some real nice actions that would be suitable.

I'd be happy to rebarrel it for you. PM me for details.

I have to agree with tincan on this, take them hunting, use them for what they were made to do. A rifle that has never been blooded isn't worth anything to me, and normal wear and tear from hunting just adds character, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, safe queens have never impressed me. .02

I too like to own rifles that will be shot but I understand those that like some to stay pristine.

I knew a guy once with safeS full of safe queens. His goto rifle was an old FN Mauser, "C" ring for those that must know, in .30-06. He hunted about everything imaginable with it. His take on it was that while he had rifles that may have been better suited caliber wise he knew exactly where the bullet was going to go everytime since he shot this rifle so much. I personally rebarrelled it for him twice.

I realize what some are saying but life changes and sometimes much sooner than anticipated...

I'm getting rid of these wonderful safe queens to get some others that I can take to experience the rigors of the hunting fields...

These new ones will be weapons of the field full of blood, stories, and scars of enjoyment...

I am planning to sell both of them and get something I could really use in the field for my son and I...

The CZ 550 Full-stock 6.5x55mm is 1 yr old and only 40 rounds through it...

The CZ Full-Stock 7x57mm has only 20 rounds through it which I bought from a reputable member here on AR a couple months ago...

I'll take some pics and place them in the CLASSIFIEDS in the next day or two...

My needs and desires have changed and I need to SATISFY some new desires in a hurry...

Thanks to all...

I just rebarreled one of the 798s. Fellow bought one in 7mm Rem Mag and never fired it before he sent it to me for new barrel in 6.5 WSM (fourth rifle he's had me rebarrel in the past 4 months).

When I pulled the original barrel I found the factory had pug high-temp RTV on the barrel threads. The barrel tenon was right on spec but the threads in the receiver were cut too big. I guess they figured the RTV would take up the space. Other than that issue the 798 was just like any other Mark X I've worked on.

Fit and finish the major issue. Of the "Z" 98s I rank them in this order.
Old MKX with the release in the guard.
Later MKX with the cross pin release.
Thennnnnnnnnnnnnnn the Daly and wayyyyyyyy down the line the 798. As Jeff said the 798 stock fit is terrible. The early Daly's were often over polished but very functional. Later ones had sharper shoulders. If you watch you can get a good ready to hunt MKX in the $3-400 range. The stock fit is good. Adjustable trigger is OK. They can all use a little smoothing. I've built many a rifle on the MKX barreled action. Never had one I couldn't get to shoot Submoa. Get a Daly, MKX and the$$$ you save over the 798 will but you a good scope on it.

If I was to rate the woodwork (based on the first one I saw) on a Rem 798 on a scale of 1-10....I'd rate it a -4......It was horrible!

About a year later I saw another one.....I rated it a 1.....yes it had improved....but was still unacceptable.

There are all kinds of J C Higgens etc out there to build from.....and the stocks on them can be salvaged if you like.

I wouldn't cross the road to look at another Remington 798!!!!!

Hey Vapodog,

I'm glad you chimed in...

What is your take on a CZ 550 action say verus a JC Higgens and others like out there?

My plans need to be a changing and I'm listening carefully to everyone's opinion and seeing if and how they apply to my particular tastes and needs...

I'm new to all of this and want to learn so that I may make decisions that will influence and satisfy my tastes...

PM me if you'd like or no problem either way...

Thanks Roland

Thanks for all the solicited and unsolicited PM's and your gracious help in time of need...

You have all been so very helpful and encouraging to say the least...

You are a asset to this forum and your great CRAFT and TRADE...

My plans have thus evolved through your help...

Now, I will use the CZ barrelled-actions that I have and will TRY to purchase a couple CZ 550 American stocks with the same bottom hinged-floorplate type vs. detachable mag type to help ensure a hopeful clean fit....

I'll go ahead and re-work the stock to fit my needs and remove a whole bunch of wood much more than I did on my first re-shape/re-finish job on my CZ American 308 stock....

Here's the link to the thread on what I did on my CZ 550 American 308...Again, thanks to all for contributing I think I'll be real happy once I get started....

Rather than try and locate cz550 American stocks which will be costly considering what they are, I'd just get new stocks made. You've already saved a lot by using actions you have. Spend it on decent stocks, not takeoffs that you will still have to spend lots more on to make look halfway decent.

I'd recommend thinking this over....

You already have two CZs, presumably complete with scopes which suit you.

Why not buy a couple of composite stocks (or even just one) for the CZs you already have paid for?

Then you could treat them like a couple of beautiful daughters. When you want to show them off, dress them in their most beautiful clothes. When you want to take them horseback riding, put them in Levi's and gingham shirts.

Like your daughters they'll fit in perfectly in each circumstance.

My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

Thanks for the suggestion and I'm leaning more to that route...

I'll price around for some aftermarket stocks to dress them in...

Roland, I am glad you decided against selling those two CZs and will look into getting a beater stock instead. Take a look at www.accurateinnovations.com to see what it has to offer. I talked with the owner about a year ago and he told me he will start offering the stocks in CZ 550. On the synthetic end, take a look at hightech-specialties.com. The company can probably fix you up with one of its stocks to fit your needs. McMillan did offer a stock for the CZ 550, but I do not know if it still does. Hope you are doing well. Your friend ... Roland.....I've never owned a CZ so cannot give an opinion....but the J C Higgins guns and their clones are excellent guns.....I like to add a M-70 style safety and a Timney trigger to them and what other items one likes but the FN based actions make extremely fine rifles.

That said I still believe that Classic Winchesters also make seriously nice rifles.....and just to be brutally honest about it the Winchester push feeds are also very nice actions to build on.....nt too popular on this forum but never the less they are extremely fine actions for big game hunting.

Don't know if they will sell you a couple of stocks (they're not listed for CZs on their website), but H-S Precision in Rapid City, South Dakota manufactures the composite stocks sold by CZ as the "factory" composite stocks on their rifles.

Ask for Tom Houghton (the owner, if he is still alive) and see what they can fix you up with.
