I am in the process of having a Winchester 1917 Enfield converted to 404 Jeffery. When this rifle is completed, I hope to take it buffalo hunting. There is a problem though that I require advice on.

The serial number of this rifle is located on the front reciever ring. And the front scope base cover part of this number. When traveling the customs people will want to verify this number and I feel it would be awkard to have to remove the front scope base in order to inspect this number.

Are there other options? Can I legally have the serial number transcibed on the side of the reciever?

Thanks

The atf would have to have the final say on this. you might ask if ADDING to a clear side would be okay, rather than removing the original.

yes, you can file off the original serial number and move th eserial number to a spot lower on the reciever ring. Make sure the whole thing is visible with scope and eveyrthing else attached to the action. Also be sure not to alter the actual serial #. They won't let you change the number.

Or you could use a Griffin and Howe side mount , solve the problem and have a good DG setup.
