20 years ago I bought into the MRC short action/.376 Steyr madness. I bought the action, a .375 MRC barrel blank, got one of the stocks from the outfit that was supplying them to CZ when they were using MRC actions, Zeiss, 1x4, rings, whole kit...and never had the gun put together.

For all practical, purposes the .376 Steyr has been overshadowed by the .375 Ruger. Brass is available, etc.

The Steyr's OAL is 3.11. The MRC short action magazine is listed at 3.125. The Ruger OAL is 3.34.

Think the action can be modified to work with the Ruger?

I ask because these are the parts I have.

thanks,

Rob

interesting post. After simply comparing specs like you did, it sounds doable. The cartridge length will be tight in the magazine. May or may not need to use shorter bullets. Not sure if longer solids will cycle. Will need to open the bolt face. No clue whether the extractor can be relieved enough to allow for the rimless style rim.
Here come the experts.

I mean, the difference is there. But not huge. My own 376 is on a very nice Mexican 36 action and a nice piece of frence walnut...

We've seen 416 Rigby on standard length actions, so likely could be done.. have you taken calipers to the bottom of the action and have a data point or three? The mrc is basically a short m70 and might fit.

I really like the 376 Steyr and I build a lot of them because I can put them on any 98. I know, everyone wants more....

My MRC short action will take a COAL of 3.140" in the magazine box.

It looks like the opening from the back of the action to the bottom of the feedramp is close to 3.3"

Don't necessarily want more gun, want more convenience.

The case head on the Ruger is .036" bigger than the Steyr, and that would be the biggest hurdle. I see data for the Ruger with bullets heavier than 300 grains. With 300 grain bullets the Steyr gives up 200=250 ft/sec.
