I've got a pattern stock that I want duplicated in a better grade of wood.

1) I buy a blank...
2) Have someone duplicate it...
3) And have someone finish & checker it for me...

Question is - what do #2 & #3 cost?

Well normally duplication is somewhere around $100.

As to the finish and checker it depends on exactly what you want. There are a few around that will do basic work for around $500. Then as you add tips, caps, metal, pads, delux checker then you go from the $500 to $3000 and all places between.

As usual just my $.02

as to number two. i use a fellow, mike kokolus(5709243279), last year he did a one piece stock for me from my pattern and it was right around one hundred forty dollars with the return shipping. real nice guy to deal with and he might be able to give you a price as to number three.

You have to inlet the metal into the duplicated stock. The time and cost varies pretty closely with the cost and accuracy of the duplication. A cheap duplication job can set you back a large amount of time in inletting.

The finish you want will also vary with cost. An oil finish is a lot more time consuming than a spray on job.

I took these prices from Royal Arms Gunstocks catalog.

Machine wood: $80
Ebony tip: $25
Recoil pad installed: $40
Hand fit and glass bed: $70
Total: $215

I don't know about Question 3

tough question.......there's more to it.....
To have a good smith convert a 95% inletted stock to a finished product is $500 and way way up.....it depends on the level of artistry you want.

Just hand fitting a barreled action to a 95% inletted stock is $225......from there you finish and checker.....I saw a fine checkering job the other day and the artist wanted $900 to do it again.....I've seen good checkering for $250 as well.....go figure...

OK, thanks for the in put - sounds like I need to provide more info for you to consider.

For finish, I'd like a nice oil-finish.

For checkering, just a well-executed point-pattern... @22-24LPI - nothing fancy in the pattern.

Extras? Well, throw on a buff horn forend cap (i've got the horn) a steel grip-cap and a decelerator recoil pad.

Chic - who would you reccomend for duplicating my existing stock?

What would you charge - ballpark - to finish the stock as stated above? PM me that info if you like.

The better the inletting, the higher the price.. and the longer it takes...

a working fit should be "cheap" when compared to guild work.. and would look it.

my mentor told me, some time ago "take you best guess as to what the hours will be on a stock, triple it, add in the PIA factor, and quote the stock..... if he takes that cost, you priced it too low.."

of course, he HATES doing stock work
