sorry...can't find my pics right now....will post them if I find them you have a fine stock already...that's a big plus. Get a bolt handle alteration, install a Timney trigger, and get a three position safety installed. Here's the best advice I can offer for this action....unless you want to spend a lot of money get a new barrel in .338-06 or 9.3 X 62 because it don't require a lot of work to convert that action to serious power that way. A 9.3 X 62 is enormous muscle, it will hold six rounds and you have nearly the performance of the .375 H&H without the fuss. It can be converted to anything you want.....it's simply a matter of money. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I have to agree with Vapodog. Unless you want to spnd some serious money in altering the action and bottom metal the 9.3x62 is an excellent choice. I would also add the 35 Whelen to the list but I would choose the 9.3. I haven't decided what to do with it yet,I have a 375 and a 35 Whelen IMP I am hopeing it wont take very much to rechamber it to a 300H&H (I only have a hundred bucks in it so far!) I may have to contact jeffeosso about the AR's(416AR sounds about right) the action is certanly Big enough

You you should feel guilty about picking that up so cheap!!!! If you want a big bore you could very easily make it into a 458 WM with very little work compared to other calibers. Will it still hold 6 rounds with magazine /trigger gaurd straightened out? I went that route once and I can't remember. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Sometimes age comes alone..

yes...in 9.3 X 62 it will.....in .375 H&H it won't. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Winston Churchill

Call me strange but I like that rifle as is. Oh, a scope might help, but otherwise..... I'm a sucker for vintage. Aut vincere aut mori

1cav, Here is a Remington Model 30S, it is the same basic action as yours. I had it built into a 458 Lott. It handles and shoots great. It will take three down and one in the pipe. I would never change the bolt handle or the saftey, as they work very well. The origial saftey is very positive acting and easy to operate. Personaly, I think that your rifle would loose a lot of "Character" if you tried to make it into another Win. M70, which it is not. The only way you could get six of anything in the mag would be with a drop box. As they only hold five '06s as is. 1cav sgt ret- The following are some pictures of my M1917 that Dennis Olson sporterized. The action was a Remington, therefore, it did not have a duck pond to fill in. It has a new Lilja tube in .300 H&H. It also has a Wisner 3 position safety (Ed LaPour makes the same unit now). The bolt handle is a Jerome Glimm. The bases are Tally's. I have another action that I am going to build a .375 H&H on to be the twin to this one. 1st cav, the take off barrel coming off the action for the .375 H&H is a 24 inch tube in .30-06 if you need an extra barrel; it's yours if you want it. That .300 H&H looks great. The other cal for little work would be the 9.3x64 Brenneke, that does in fact = the .375 H&H power wise. If I had an action like that big one I would spend the money and make a .416 Rigby classic and classy on that platform.................it's only money

Sorry ... did someone say 358Norma Mag or STA? I also like the look of the rifle as is. Would love to find one like that in Oz, but preferably based on a P14. I'd take an M17 like that though!! Cheers... Con

30cal mag fan that's Very Nice I like the way the bolt handle work's with the rest of the mod's While I don't intend to change the safety (I like the way it work's and is very positive)however I have to change the bolt handle that's a knuckle rap waiting to happen,we've (the gunsmith and I) have decided to do a simple rechamber to 300Win Mag(the barrel is an arsinal replacement and has very sharp 4 groove land's and groove's) as I already have a set of die's and about 400 piece's of brass from the 300 winnie that has been sold but I do like the way the bolt release really cleans up the left side of the receiver, and squareing the bridge that's nice

Friends- Thank you all for your complements!! I am very proud to say the least. 1cav sgt ret, you have a beautiful specimen of a m1917, especially the way they squared the rear receiver bridge. Like you say, a new bolt handle or straightening the old one will go a long way. vapodog, thanks for the double thumbs up!!! Best regards, May the wind be in your face and the sun at your back. P. Mark, thats beautiful. Is it possible to get a closeup picture of the rear of the bolt release to see how the back end of the spring is supported. The ones I have seen end up having a very weak spring pressure that sometimes will not hold the bolt release tight against the side of the receiver.

The dogleg bolt handle is well positioned for fast manipulation which is the reason the Brits shaped it that way. BI agree it wins no beauty contest and Remington eventually straightened it out on the 720. I have not shot a 1917 for years but don't remember having my knuckle bumped, maybe a magnum would be different.

I was planning on replaceing the stock but it cleaned up very nicely While it isn't nearly as nice as 30magfan's it should be a good shooter

I still need to do the metalwork and rechamber but it's coming along nicely I think
