I've seen them on old lever action rifles, and used them on 22 LR rifles and BB guns as a yute.

The sears JC Higgins model 50 came like that. One version ha dthe sights on correctly the other had them installed like this. Odd huh?

They used the receiver for the slot since the barrel forward is too thin. Probably safe enough, but sure looks screwey.
