Bluing stainless question?????

Jeff and any of you other gun cranks out there:

I'm putting low ringmounts on a Ruger "African". Factory "Low Hawkeye Matte" ringmounts are not in production yet so I was going to take a set of mkII low stainless rings and apply a matte black cure type epoxy coating to match the Hawkeye finish. It is actually very close to a "Leupold Matte Black" and should be easy to do.

But, I read somewhere that you could blue the stainless to match the new matte gray finish of the Ruger stainless bolt. I have access to a bluing tank and have a spare set of ringmounts if this is correct and you could square me away.

Thanks,
GVA

Gary,
if i get your question, you are looking for two answers..

first, if you want the matte gray, bead blast the OUTSIDE of the rings (gorilla glue is GREAT for masking off things... about 5X the sticky of duct tape, trim with a razor) and then chunk it in the bluing tank.. you MIGHT need to go 295/296, but any hotter, and you are risking the bath's life span.

this turned my bolt a very nice dark gray.

or, you do a VERY easy "hold me over" surface finish on the rings to make them black.

tape off the insides and all critical finish surfaces.

spray with your favorite finish, and bake of required... duracoat, gun coat, or BBQ paint (not just spray paint)...

heck, I have even seen them done with (GAG) thinned down rhino coating.
