Sitting here trying to decide on the next project. I had orginally planned to build a replacement 6.5PDK(gibbs+) to replace the one I had loaned to the West Tx rancher we hunt on. I doubt seriously I will get it back. But I just figured out that I had loaned out my reamer didn't get it back. Now 16-18 months later no contact. Frowner

So I'm thinking of building a reach out and touch something rifle. Don't need any more BIG Bores. Darn pinched nerve keeps me from shooting what I have as much as I want. So I have a magnum MKX a walnut stock just needing to be checkered and no barrel.

I have a 7STW but being a 26" laredo it isn't something I care to carry for any distance. Also have a 25-06 and several other 7mms. So looking in the 6.5 or maybe 257Wby range. I have no problems with a wildcat but am limited to a 06 length magazine box.

Figured 26" barrel. CM to match the action. Was thinking about fluting the barrel. Not to lighten it or make it stiffer. Just for looks.

So how would you spend your winter. Bottomline is I don't NEED anything but why should that stop me??? jumping

As usual just my $.02

OK, I'll bite.

I suspect you are looking to confirm the obvious. I can see no reason you shouldn't build a 264 WM, and report back to us the results, etc.

I have the same delema - a great MK X magnum action, stock, and most everything to go with it, including a selection of barrel blanks - SS 6.5mm in 9" twist #3 contour, CM 7mm in 9" twist #3 contour, .308 SS 10" twist #3 contour, three 8mm barrels all 10" twist - one CM Douglas #3 - one SS Douglas #4 - one LW #1400 SS.

Decisions can be tough on a guy. Smiler

I managed to pick up an M-70 pushfeed in .300 win mag the other day....it has a bent barrel...so I got it quite cheap. The longer I look at it the more it looks like a .264 to me!!!

Problem is that I know it really don't do anything a .270 doesn't do..... and the more I look at it the more I say.....just sell it!!!!

I always said that I'd never build another integral half round/half octagon with a full length rib and integral sights barrel.....but that was then...

does this ring a bell?

One might also want to build something on the beltless .375 Ruger case.....neck it to .270 and see what it'd do.....

Yes, that's the "problem" with the 264 WM, and perhaps the 6.5-06, and the 6.5x284, etc. Wink

I have thought seriously about making a 323 Hollis. Surely that will do something the 270 won't do - besides twitching a pinched nerve. Big Grin Like delivering a 195 - 200 gr or maybe 220 gr bullet with authority at 250 yards, and whacking the crap out any hog, deer, elk, etc. that show itself within 300 yards.

I second the .264 Win!
It is classic and cool and the bullet selection in .264 is awsome for flyers!
Todays powders are better than when it was new, and a 26" tube will take advantage of that! It will be mutch more potent than a regular .270 Win.

Already have a 308 & 358 Norma.
A 257Condor is what? 257x61 S&H??

As to overlap. If I got rid of every rifle that does pretty much the same as one of my others I would back myself back down to 3 rifles again.

Anyone seen a 6.5-375Ruger reamer? If I have to pay for a new reamer I'd have another 6.5PDK made. A 26" allowed me to beat my buddies 24" 264.

What exactly is a 6.5PDK?

Also Paul, I suspect that you could beat your buddies 24" 264 with a 26" 264, if that is your goal, and avoid the cost of a wildcat reamer and custom dies. Big Grin But then perhaps that's too practical. Wink

Paul, We've been talking about these Mark X's elsewhere. The one I have was to be used for a 264 Win Mag, but I picked up a M70 pushfeed I'm gonna use instead. The 264 with a 26" barrel will do everything a 257 Roy will and more. It gives you the option to use much heavier bullets. I personally play to use the 130gr. Scirroco II's at hopefully around 3200fps. I plan to use a Krieger #2 barrel at 26" and to set in a McMillan Supergrade Edge fill stock. Looking for a flat shooting, relatively light weight rifle.

What twist rate is appropriate for these 130 - 140 grain bullets in the 264 Mag?

1-in-8" will work nicely.

The 6.5PDK was simply my own designed case. Take a 280Rem case move the shoulder forward and blow it out to .458" Looks very similar to a 6.5Gibbs with a little longer neck 40deg shoulder. My case gives me a little more capacity than the gibbs.

Big GrinThe whole purpose of my PDKs were to try and match the factory magnums of the day. What I did find was in many cases I could match or beat many of my reloads if I had a longer barrel. Beating his 264 with a 264 just doesn't have the appeal.

Every one of suggestions are good ones. Most of them I've bounced around myself. Sure easier to decide when I NEED to fill a certin gap vs just WANTING a new rifle.
This question hasn't been addressed. Opinions onf fluting. Like I said more for looks than any of the claimed benefits. Any negative issues as to accuracy etc?

On my 22-250, I asked Roger Ferrell about fluting. The choice was to use a #4 or #5 fluted, or use a #3 w/out flutes. He, without question went to the #3 no flutes. He didn't give a reason and I didn't ask. He does this stuff for a living and has yet to fail me. That's the extent of my knowledge on the subject.
