For those who see these a lot, what can cause the enblock clip to prematurely eject--pops out with a few rounds still in it? I haven't looked at it yet but thought someone who's seen this could save me some ammo. Thanks, John Farner If you haven't, please join the NRA!

Check the follower rod. Make sure it isn't bent or excessively worn. If it is bent, it can cause the op rod catch and clip latch to release early. Check the clip latch spring. There should be a fair amount of tension to hold the clip firmly against the latch. If it is weak or short that can cause premature ejectulation. The op rod catch depressor arm could be damaged. Do you have a latch timing gauge? If not I will be glad to send you mine. It is useful for checking ejector latch timing and adjusting the depressor arm. Well, that and a hammer. I would recommend making up some dummies, remove the stock and assemble the gun without the stock and hand feed the dummies while watching the depressor arm and latch. Though quite sloppy without the stock, you can still get a feel for the function of those parts. Good luck! _______________________________________________________________________________ This is my rifle, there are many like it but this one is mine. Exactly the problem; I'm just not familiar with these technical terms. You see, during my entire military service the M16 was our battle rifle; all the Garands were in museums. No, I don't have a latch timing gauge, but I do have several hammers of various sizes and weights. Those, and my selection of pipe wrenches get me through most jobs. I'll make up the dummy rounds and give it a whirl. If I can't figure it out that way I'll take you up on the offer. Thanks, John Farner If you haven't, please join the NRA!

The Garand was long retired by the time I joined the Corps. I was fortunate enough to spend time with the M14 before being issued the Mattie Mattel. _______________________________________________________________________________ This is my rifle, there are many like it but this one is mine. Hello Westpak, Well said about the trouble shooting of the Garand U.S. Service Rifle. I own and shoot NM built Garand in 308 and feel sorry for those not having spent many happy hours shooting the finest battle rifle ever invented. (Note: Battle Rifle, not Assault Rifle) Word of caution to the newby's on Garands, they really like the taste of human flesh and in particular the end of the thumb!!

They only eat thumbs of those that are dumb enough to place them in harms way !. A bit weighty for my taste , but a fine shooting " Battle Rifle " non the less . Does it do it with ALL of your enblocks ? or just a particular one ?. If so check the follower rod like Westpac suggested . I'm far better on Mattie Mattel models or M14's although I own them all . Never under estimate the intelligence of the Military !. I qualified expert on the M16 along with 600-800 meters on the M14 only to be issued a Shotgun in VN !!. I guess they didn't want their explosives man using a rifle ? I might have been real dangerous !??. Shoot Straight Know Your Target . ...

Although I did not see or use an M1 in my military career, when I was a senior in HS I took Metals Machining Technology classes at Springfield Technical Community College, and our studies all took place in what were John Garand's pattern shop. Lots of the tools he used were still in operation there and lots of relics. It was inspiring to study there. John Farner If you haven't, please join the NRA!

Thanks to the Garand, those Mausers have been pretty easy to come by for the past 60 years. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

Made me smile, too. And reminded me of a supposedly actual conversation between an American pilot of a commercial jet and the tower at (IIRC) the Berlin airport. It seems the pilot was having difficulty figuring out which runway he was supposed to land on and the traffic controller was getting exasperated trying to explain which runway was which. I paraphrase here: ATC: "Haven't you ever been to Berlin before?" American pilot, tersely: "Yes I have, but it was dark and I didn't land..." How about a loose barrel? That's all I've found so far. What's SOP for fixing that? John Farner If you haven't, please join the NRA!

You might try tightening it. Okay seriously there are two choices. You can either fit a new barrel, or, if the customer is tight on funds and the barrel is otherwise in good shape with good headspace, you can cut the shoulder of the barrel back about .250 and make a close fitting .260 shim and refit the barrel from there. This procedure saves good barrels from the junk yard. Allow for about .008 crush from Zero. _______________________________________________________________________________ This is my rifle, there are many like it but this one is mine. I was thinking that some sort of washer would do the trick. Oh, I also found the clip latch pin had moved out about .125" and the spring seems weak. I think that's the cause of the "premature ejectulation". Thanks! John Farner If you haven't, please join the NRA!

Not really very helpful at all! Next time try a Lee Enfield No4. I am sorry that you are having problems but I have heard of this before. Although never the remedy.

Actually it would not be much different than a Remington 700 recoil lug, except a much more precision fit. But yes, if you make the .250 "washer" tight and blend it with the shoulder, no one will ever notice it. Unless you accidentally make it out of stainless. _______________________________________________________________________________ This is my rifle, there are many like it but this one is mine.
