Hi, can a CZ 550 cal 375 HH be lighten by turning (on lathe) the barrel, slightly reducing the diameter and emptying the stock? Is it a reasonable/effective solution? Thanks.

I would not turn that barrel, but thats just me. If you do turn the barrel you run the risk of it not shooting as well as it does now. You also will have a gap throughout the entire barrel channel. You could carefully remove some wood from the butt end of the gun, while constantly checking balance to make sure that it is not altered in a way you dont like. I a like a rifle just a bit muzzle heavey. If you have stock making skills other parts of the stock could be thinned for additional reduction in wieght.

the weight isn't in the barrel... that's a pretty common discussion point around the campfire here... the weight of that is in the ACTION... SKB has some good points...

but, if you bob the barrel to 23", the handling will entirely change, as well

It depends on whether you want to shoot it or just look at it. The CZ 375 is about 9.5 lbs., about 2 pounds too much!

I had the smith file off the rear sight hump on a Lott and could have turned down the barrel after whacking it off behind the front sight, but its weight was probably reduced enough. Get a CZ stock from Canada or a McMillan replacement or get a new Douglas barrel w/#3 contour and the hell with how it looks.

It doesn't balance, it has gaps, blah, blah, blah....just shoot it! Wink

My 8.7 lb. Lott:

The CZ Safari stock should be easy to get since you are in Italy.
