Well I bought someone else's just started Mauser project and have made some advances on it but I am unsure as to which way to go on the cartridge of choice. It is currently fitted with a .257 Roberts barrel but I have a small ring Mauser and a Ruger Ultra Light in .257 Roberts already so I think I should do something else that goes with the Mauser Lightweight Sporter theme.
I know many of you will say "9.3" right away and I am considering that option (enough said on the 9.3 please).
I don't think I need a 7x57, I have something similar.
No 8x57 or 8mm-06 needed as I have a 30/06 that does that stuff just fine.
And no 35 Whelen as I am saving that for a Springfield action build.

Any of you have any Mauser Sporter theme suggestions outside of the ones mentioned above?

9.5x57...375 bullets are cheap...why? Just because that is what I always thought of doing to one of my Mausers and never did.

If you want to be "practicle", the logical choice to me would be the 6.5x55. The other 6.5's mentioned are an option. Then there's the 6x57 Mauser which is almost an exact duplicate of the 244 Rem. Ballisticly speaking, there's not a whole lot new under the sun.

338-06, 358 win, or 376steyr

all excellent rounds, and all will fit pretty easy.

since you are going to do the 35w, drop the 358 win..

leaves you with the 338-06 and the steyr.

Jeffe where can I look up cartridge dimensions and spec's on the Steyr?
Case capacity and what is expected muzzle velocity?
Thanks

For the previous posters I also have a 6.5x55.

You don't say (as far as I can see) what your quarry is to be, are you to hunt the north American continent or do you intend to hunt in Africa.

If the former something on the .338 bore (myself I have a Dakota 330) which would serve you well i feel.

If Africa is a possibility I would go for a .375 H&H.

You seem already to have most other smaller options for lesser game covered

400 Whelen Improved.

It duplicates the 450/400 exactly, and can be used on medium sized to large game without reservation.

Wow you did not leave yourself much room.

You really only have a few options left.

6X57
6.5X57
6.5X55

These pretty well do about what your Roberts already do.

9X57
9.3X57
338-06

These fairly well replaicate your 35W goal

The 376 styer as suggested by Jeffe sound like it might fill something in your battery though.

On the other hand everybody really does need a nice lightweight 7X57.

Pick a cartridge that fills the magazine length wise with the bullets you will use. Many Mausers jam on crf cause on rounds like the 7-57 the col is too short.

The 270 Winchester comes to mind.

Umm, you have other options smaller. you have narrowed it down, only BIGGER and smaller to go. Why not do the 224 clark, 7x57 necked down to 22cal, shooting 85 grain bullets with a 1:7" twist barrel. Hell of a rodent gun. I had a chance to buy one on a mexican mauser once (if I remember right) for 350, but never have the money at the right time. Smiler

Or go bigger, 10.75, 416 Taylor, try one of the AR cartridges.

6.5-06 was my choice for a current mauser project. Easy to form brass and excellent ballistics. 6.5mm is a popular LR caliber, therefore a good selection of bullets. The case should feed and chamber in the mauser without any real issues.

This will list some rounds that aren't candidates due to shoulder geometry (like the .308 Win. family - .260 Rem, 7mm-08, etc.), but should catch most if not all real candidates. I would pick the .284 Winchester or a descendant.

According to the AmmoGuide Cartridge Identification and Search Tool...

Searched for rounds where:
Bullet diameter is greater than .255
...and...
Shoulder width is greater than .412
...and...
Rim width is equal to .47 ± .005
...and...
Case length is between 1.5 and 2.500 (inclusive)

Search Results: 47 cartridges matched:

Well that list narrows it down!

Guys the trouble is I'm not quite ready to make the move on this project as I have another in progress.
I also want something that I don't have already or even real close and the trouble is I have a lot of guns. Listed below are my current rifles and some are multiple rifles in that cartridge.
.223
22/250
.243
.257 Roberts
6.5x55
.284 Win
30/30
30/06
.338 Win Mag
375 H&H Mag

I'm not wanting to take the step up to .40 + right now and I see the 7x57 as a comparable cartridge to the .284, the 8x57 as similar to a 30/06 and so on.
I guess I'm leaning towards a 9.3 or maybe a 6.5/06 but who knows yet?

.376 Steyr - http://ammoguide.com/?catid=158

I limited the search to rim sizes of .47" series rounds (note the search params say "Rim width is equal to .47 ± .005")

That's why the .376 Steyr didn't show up.

Make it a 7x57, probably the world classic of all time. I know that you've got it surrounded, but who cares, It's the quintessential Mauser hunting cartridge. capt david troll

Your current inventory pretty much covers all bases, what animals do you intend to hunt with it and under what conditions, prairies, dense forests or? I would consider 270 win, 7X64 or 9,3X62. If you want a longer and slightly heavier rifle 300 Win/300 H&H, 8X68S, 9,3X64. A 404 Jeffery if there are plans for African big game like buffalo, elephants etc. Is the action a military production or civilian, year of manufacture? Magnum cartridges require a new floorplate, magazine box and follower suitable for these rounds, which is an extra expense. Big budget classic rifle with embellishments or a standard rifle?

Cheers

you are in the same position i am in, you don't need another rifle, you just want one ! I notice your magnums are .338 and .375,
A .264 7mm or 300 might be fun,the first two are prety easy on the shoulder , and the 300 is an extreemy usfull cartridge, and while no pussycat, I bet if you put it in a good stock and did.nt go featherweight you would like it prety well.
Did I see a 25,06 on you list ?
A .264 with a long barrel would be fun ,
Hell pick one and just make it a rifle you like what ever round you choose you will find a use for it...tj3006

With what you have already, I'd suggest the 3 previously suggested rounds-

270
25-06
or 7.62X39 (a bit more work but I've always been curious about this setup and think it would be pretty cool)

for every hour in front of the computer you should have 3 hours outside
