Feasible? Idea on what it might cost? Suggestions on the barrel length welcomed

That's an easy one as the 7mm-08 is basically the 308 necked down.Savage did make the 99 in 284 Win as I remember.

A late model Sav 99 already chambered for the 308 cartridge can be rebarreled from 22 cal to 35 cal using the 398 case and from 22 cal to 416 cal using the 284 case blown out a bit.

The Savage barrel requires a bit more 'smithing than a Remington, so might cost a bit more.

Gogo some of the Lever Gun forums for more info and check the Auctions sites for prices on used rifles.

The 99 was chambered in 7-08 and 284 so you might just look around for a rifle to buy/trade. The problem is people think they are golden now so get ready to be......

No matter what, unless you can find a cheap, used OEM barrel to swap in...I would guess $300 minimum to do just a rebarrel...

Luck

Numrich had the left over bbls. from Savage and back in the early 90's ran a sale on them. I picked up one in 7-08 and a 22-250 to rebarrel some late actions with. 7-08 wound up on a 308 and 22-250 on a 243, both solid frame rotary magazine thumb safety guns. Both work fine with no other alterations. I am a lefty so this was a project for usable guns, wanting at one time a full set in 22-250, 250, 260 Rem, 7-08, 308, 338 & 358. Guns got so pricey that I had to settle for 22-250, 7-08 and 308, with a few older lever safety 22HPs, 250s and 300s. I believe IIRC Savage never made the 22-250 except in the clip load model and think the same might be true for the 7-08. Numurich is out of these, but any smith should be able to fit a barrel, just depends on how badly you want one. There is a difference in barrel threads between newer and older 99s.

Agree. Just shoot 150 grain bullets in the .308.

You must have a red hot burning jones of a .284 caliber aching need to go to all the bother and trouble of even thinking about converting a perfectly good .308 Win. into a 7mm-08 in a Savage 99. shame

A .308 Win. is a great find, and a true keeper, and a friend for life, in a great old rifle like a Savage 99. Big Grin
