Long story short, I will need to ship a handgun from Haines, AK to Dillingham. I will be traveling through Canada for a bit before re-entering Alaska. Can I use a copy of my dealer's FFL in Haines to ship via USPS to the same delaer in Dillingham? Lou

I don't think so; long guns only. As far as I know, UPS overnight is the last resort for handguns.

USPS is OK from FFL to FFL. The PO has a form the sending FFL must fill out. It should be shipped Overnight, insured, adult signature.

Thanks for the clarification. I was thinking they wouldn't at all. I tried to look it up on their website but the government would still rather sell you a publication than just make the info available. UPS (at least mine) will let a private individual ship. No extra form but you have to ship overnight, adult signature required. You can only ship from a service center though, not a store-front franchise like The UPS Store. They cannot be picked up by drivers, either.

if you aren't a ffl holder IN PERSON not NOT ever fill in the "just a shipping form for guns" .. STOP THAT .. if you aren't the ffl holder, in person, filing in that form is a form of perjury... that form states "i am a federally licensed firearms dealer" or words to that effect.

gentlemen .. an unlicensed person may NOT ship a handgun via USPS, full stop

important definintions -- unlicensed and handgun ..

a ffl may ship via usps, conditions apply

Here's my dilemma. I will be traveling on a ferry from WA to AK. I will be traveling/working as a cop on the ferry in lieu of fees. I get off the ferry in Haines, AK and will ride my Harley through Canada. I can't carry my firearm through Canada so I have to ship it to my FFL. Can I ship it to a police department? Or, can my FFL fill out the form ahead of time.

I have thought about not even carrying my sidearm and just bringing my Taser, but the boat wants me to have the gun. Normally the cop rides the ferry all the way to AK, but I want to ride through the Yukon Territory. Possible solutions, please.

Thanks, Lou

If you so choose you can take the handgun with you through Canada......you must declare it as you cross into Canada, they will put it in a sealed container and you must give a time and place you expect to reenter the USA.....the seal had better not be broken and the firearm had better be in your posession.....and all is OK.

Check with Canadian border personnel to confirm this....it was the case a couple years back!

That would be great if it's truly possible. Have you or someone you know done this?

This is info furnished to me several years ago by Canadian customs when I planned a trip to Alaska.

You should confirm this for yourself as it may be outdated data!

The customs folks don't know anything about a box and to get a peace officer authorization takes 60-90 days. I contacted the local gun shop in Haines and they told me that they will ship it for me. It's something they regularly do for cops.

Thanks, Lou
